oscarsdad
Best beaches are towards stud land bay and Poole / Bournemouth if you want sandy beaches. Jurassic coast has some stunning scenery - don't miss curdle door or lulworth cove.
johnlewis
Weymouth has stunning beach as well as the ones mentioned above.
Whitebridges
West Bay, out of season. Poole Harbour is fantastic but always in season. Harry is on Sandbanks and loves the tourists when he is away betting at Goodwood (or the like) Check out the Durdle Door. old rooster
Swanage is quite nice, most of Dorset is very pleasant, some sandy beaches, probably the best known is Studland with free roadside parking up near the chain ferry if you don't mind a bit of a walk or some National Trust car parks. It is the Swanage side of the Poole harbour outlet so staying at Swanage and driving up is an option, Bournemouth isn't far away with some more sandy beaches. We go down quite often as the boat is kept at Portland marina.
karpman
Had a week down that way couple of weeks ago. Stayed in hobourne caravan park near Christchurch. Bournemouth was great but spent most of our time at mudeford quey, great crabbing but beach is a bit messy compared to some in area. Never managed a trip on the swanage railway unfortunately. Karpman After years of going to Swanage on holiday we went on the railway for the first time a few weeks back. Bit pricey but just got to love those old steam engines. Gimlet
A childhood favourite of mine is Man 'o War Cove. Directly the other side of Durdle Door. Take the left hand set of steps down the cliff path instead of the right. Its a small sun-trapped lagoon protected from the open sea by a rock reef. The water is usually clear, warm in September and completely safe for kids with inflatables. Its gently shelving but deep enough at the reef for diving and jumping and its a great place for snorkelling. Pick a day with an off-shore breeze and there'll be no swell on the reef and the water will be clear. Bit of a hike down the cliff path but worth it. Lovely spot though I agree!
Gordon R
Swanage - medium size, decent beaches. Weymouth - lot larger, but plenty going on. Lyme Regis - small, but very pretty.

Mungler
I can remember going to the Grosvenor hotel in Swanage when I was a boy. Would have been before 1985. Lovely place.
unapalomablanca
I can see a lot of people flight happening to places like dorset and devon,.wiltshire and somerset. You still have relatively normal people living and visiting there, it often seems miles from chavdom. I go there quite a bit mainly to the west, and people seem like they used to be when I was a kid. Cornwall would also be great, if you've got the dough and the work coming in. Edited August 3, 2013 by unapalomablanca
bigrob
Swanage pier is arguably the best pier for summer mackerel - all you need is a spinning rod and a float rig. .
