12 bore with 10 bore barrel?

Was reading through Mossberg's site and noticed their 835 Ulti-mag pump action

In addition, all 835® Ulti-Mag® smooth bore barrels are overbored to 10 gauge bore dimensions, reducing recoil and producing exceptionally uniform patterns from both light and heavy shot charges. Working in tandem with the performance-enhancing overbored barrels, strategic placement of eight ports on each side of the 835® barrel direct gasses upward and outward to not only reduce felt recoil, but to minimize muzzle jump for quick second shot recovery. mossberg

Its a 12 gauge with 3 1/2 chambers but from the sounds of it uses a 10 bore barrel? Anyone tried firing one of these. Is it just a gimmick or would it be better? Is there a pump action you can get in 10 bore form apart from the Browning BPS?

Never heard of this concept do other manufacturers also do a similar thing?

Looks on paper to be the ideal solution to the old problem of expensive steel 10 bore carts for wildfowlers.

There is a wildfowler, who`s name escapes me lives in the Invernessish area, and he uses this system and has spent a considersble time matching not just gun and cartridge but shot size, choke etc. and he has it sussed.

I`m not sure about the ballistics but the idea of porting a gun is an old one.

Playing with bore diameters has been quite fruitful for some manufacturers, especially in the development of back bored barrels. Wads are quite forgiving of relatively minor adjustments due to the cup seal over powder wad flexing. There are bores out to 18.8mm (given that 12 should be 18.4mm) but not a full 10 gauge boring. Mossys have been around for a while so I would assume they have tested it thoroughly but a 1.2mm increase? The name of the game is reducing friction in the bore to get optimum velocity and patterning - I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
