I actually used the Eley HB Pigeon 32g round at the PW shoot at Bisley this last August. I can honestly say that is one of the fiercest recoiling cartridges I have ever used. I shot OK with it, but my God did I get battered about by it. I'd rather pay more for a softer cartridge, than go for a bargain load that cripples me.

Most of the guns on the syndicate I shoot have chosen to change to 20 Bores over the last 2 years. The reason being most of the gents are a little on the mature side and the lighter gun suits them better on some of the long walk ups.

However I have noted we seem to be getting more and more runners as opposed to clean kills, so much so that last sat we had to drop a drive as we had spent some time on the last two looking for pricked birds!

Now I am well aware that 28grms of well placed shot will drop all but a grizzly bear, but bearing in mind most of us are at best an average game shot, I prefer to take advantage of a little extra punch packed by 32 grms of Supreme Game in a 12 bore. I just wondered what the PW panel of experts think.

My overall opinion of the magical 20 bore is- You either love it or hate it!!!

Many a story is heard of the game shooter chucking his 12g in for a 20 and vice versa. I had one for a long while, but moved it on purely for one reason, cost of carts and no good for wildfowling. When using one primarily for clays, pigeon and game the cost increases rapidly over volume of shells fired. However I have seen some remarkable shooting lately on driven days with 28 bores. In a nutshell a 20b is excellent in the right hands as is any calibre. As for youngsters my son started 6 months ago (14) and he was ok straight on with a 12g but with lighter loads.

They do pop a bit, but they are fine through a heavier gun or a S/A. They are very popular in this area a lot of people use them, including quite a few on here.

The HB Pigeon definitely weren't fine in the 7lb B25 I'd just bought, which had its first outing at Bisley. The gun needed fitting to me, but I got a real kicking from those cartridges. Having got the gun fitted perfectly, I still find them pretty uncomfortable to shoot.
