Alfred
New(ish) to the sport and don't know the area that well either having spent many years abroad. I don't know any clay shooters round here, so I'm a bit stuck, google throws up a few places but none close by. I work on a shoot in Cumbria as a hobby in my spare time but as I said I'm new to clays. Any tips on good places to go close by?
Will Poon
Hi Alfred, welcome to PW by the way It's not too far away from you but I'm a member of coniston shooting ground http://www.conistonshootingground.co.uk/ there open 6 days a week closed Mondays, I'm sure there are other clubs in your area but I'm not that clued up on them Edited November 29, 2013 by Willpoon
polester
Crabtree just off J36 M6 is a cracking shoot. some easy and some deceivingly hard. Probably 15-20 mins from you they shoot weds and sat till 3pm. Theres also 1 in silverdale but don't have any info on that 1 sorry.
Alfred
I'd looked at Coniston but its an hour away, I was hoping for somewhere I could sneak off to on a Saturday morning for a couple of hours without the wife moaning too much....although she's just put in her application for her license so she'll be joining me soon. Crabtree sounds great, its 20 mins up the road and I've been up that way before when I had a couple of lessons at Withets shoot, so I know the area reasonably well. I'm busy tomorrow at my lads 10th birthday party but if the weather is ok I might give Crabtree a try next weekend. kent
Whithets clay ground top end Lancaster / Carnforth just off the motorway, if you cant find it I am sure Malmo guns and Fawcets have full details. It on your doorstep, Coniston is too far its quicker going to Blackpool

I was looking for a more commercial place with a variety of stands and open every weekend.

Alfred
Blackpool? never been myself Nor me, but might be worth a look, its only 30 mins down the road. I like the sound of the Crabtree one, thats 20 mins away and looks good.
BlaserF3
Blackpool is a better shoot than Crabtree, much more target variety.
100milesaway
Crabree is a superb shoot within a very welcoming family enviroment. The targets are brilliant and the vistas scenic, whats more it is very competitivly priced. from Auntie.

The target were brilliant for a time but I went last week and I thought they were poorly presented, Blackpool really have a good variety, normally changed every three weeks, even though it's just a flat field. I've no axe to grind with Crabtree as I enjoy going there but honestly it was not as good as it used to be. I used to mention to Ed that the difficulty level was a bit too much for some but it's been dumbed down now too much.
Gordon R
Bobbin Mill at Scorton - just outside Lancaster. They have Skeet, DTL and Compak Sporting - every Sunday from 10.00am. Hot drinks, but no hot food or toilets.
Scully
Do Fawcetts of Lancaster no longer have a clay ground at Over Kellet? Handy from the M6 if it's still on the go. Can also recommend Crabtree. Bowscar at Penrith is fine for DTL, but Crabtree beats it hands down for Sporting; mostly DTL and OT at Bowscar. Fawcetts ground was Withets, but Mick Nicholson took over a few years ago. Its still there but not open every weekend, as far as I know its only once a month. Crabtree comes well recommended so I'll give it a try next weekend.
BlaserF3
If you are on your own you will struggle as you really need someone else to button for you at Crabtree, one of the lads might be kind enough to go round with you though. I believe that a Claymate system is being installed next year which will overcome that problem.
Del T
Crabtree is very good, Blackpool is a very good ground with some testing targets. A good shoot on a Sunday is Wyre with our very own BlaserF3(Mike) hitting 45 out of 50 last week which was good to watch. I must try harder next time.! All my mates that shoot are down south, so I'm billy no mates up here :(
Spud dog
Alfred Just send me a pm, if you want a meet up, either crabtree or blackpool works for me. I live just outside Lancaster so easy for a meet up.
Alfred
PM sent Spud. What about dogs, if I get my shotgun out then the dog knows he's coming with me. Are dogs allowed at clay grounds?

I shouldn't be taking a dog to a clay ground, even a trained gundog will suffer hearing damage its just unnecessary. A dogs hearing is just way more sensitive than our own.Teaching the dog its not its right to come anytime you have a gun is far better OR failing that don't let it see

I wouldn't have thought a dog sitting a few feet behind a shooter would suffer hearing damage? I'm open to be told differently though, I'll ask the vet. The dogs hearing is more sensitive, but I wasn't aware it was more fragile. I've been on shoots where individual guns have shot plenty of birds, with their dogs sat next to them. He's been with me once before and once he realised there were no pheasants or duck to bring back he lay down and went to sleep. (The clay sites owner had four dogs there all day) I was joking (sort of) about him thinking he's coming, when I get my gun out he looks at me to see what we're doing, he doesn't automatically run to the door or anything like that. Although if I start putting all our shooting stuff in the Landrover then he gets excited because he knows we're going on a shoot. Unnecessary? Yep, but we enjoy each others company. I might make him some ear muffs Edited December 1, 2013 by Alfred
