I know someone who has a Plummer and it's an out and out killer,I like patterdales, hard workers and scared of nothing and love the look of them but with Kids I'm not sure.I had a border and they are known to be late starters and mine was a gem with the kids but a real good worker,be sure to buy working lines,my mate bought a non working border and it was a little thing with a squashed nose,I bought from working lines and it was athletic with a deep chest and would go all day.

Just be sure what you are buying, they are scared of nothing but having a JRT you know that,I trained to a decent standard, not easy with a terrier,it's a buyers market,I would love another one day.

It seems to be a big ask. Ratting, digging dog, shooting and good with kids. There are plenty of well bred lines of black or red terriers that will do earth work, and fulfil the ratting role. Good Russell's are harder to find, and a good Border even rarer. You also want something good around kids, which maybe the most difficult. If you want something good with kids and knocking about on the shoot a Border probably comes the closest, although I would never fully trust any of them around kids.

Real borders are few & far between if you intend digging, you may waste 2yrs rearing/training only to find its no good. Plenty of russells out there but again its finding a decent pup. Lakeys can be headstrong & gassy, plummers again hit & miss as digging dogs. Patterdales best bet IMO but finding the best breeding is the difficult part, maybe not as difficult if you only intend to dig occasionally. As to trusting dogs, we're talking terriers here not pit bulls. Socialising is the key, I personally would never trust ANY dog 100% with kids but fetching dogs/kids up to respect each other is the key

I've got pat/border crosses, the oldest is a real good worker who is laying on his back in front of the fire snoring at the moment!

Soft as **** unless your name is roland or charlie. I can put food down for him and take it away again no problem at all as i can with all of mine

but i wouldn't trust them 100% with kids, there can be only one boss!

A fiery terrier at work should not mean aggressive in the house. Socialisation is key, better get them as puppies and have them in playing with the kids under supervision from the get go. I have not owned many terriers but once had one that was a total nut for killing all manner of vermin above or below ground. never ever picked a fight with any other dog but finished many - with kids? well they could do just about anything to him and often did BUT he was raised around them (lots of them) from a tiny puppy. To be fair I think he might rank as my most reliable and trustworthy dog around kids ever but like I say exposed from an early age daily. Even the lab although very solid with kids (again I made a real effort to expose him a lot early) has the one fault in this regards as he worries over my youngest 8yr old and might I fear protect her against another child in play. Children and dogs should never the less be supervised

MrHarrison,

I keep (and work Terriers). This (web) site is far far more normal than most hunting sites but still? Kent is totally totally right when he/she says its all about socialisation, I keep digging terriers and around the house they are great, no aggression, Mine are broke to birds and ferrets but when shown to quarry they are mental, my oldest terrier ( and Hardest) sleeps with my son, All dogs reflect their owners personality, so?

For me it would have to be a JRT. All day long as an all rounder I don't think you'll find a better one. My old dog knew when beating meant staying close and not to try and eat pheasants. Rabbiting was a different story she knew she could go far enough ahead, but fantastic character and the only dog I have ever full trusted with kids.

I would recommend Chapman lines for what your looking for or a 1st cross from a Chapman.

I wouldn't say he's just for the fame. Id recommend the dogs all day. But certainly you will find cheaper terriers.

As with anything the bigger the reputation the larger the price tag. 😖

Shame though as there probably won't be many more like him once he's gone.

Anyone with a spaniel bitch who would be interested in crossing to a very good Border dog please get in touch. When I say good I mean great hunting ability and very hard below ground. Non aggressive with other dogs .I think it would make a great cross. I cant hunt him too much because i loose him to ground.

He is hard but you don't work him often because you lose him to ground.

Buy a bellman and flint locator system and learn how to dig the poor ******* out.

This dog is a serious digging dog. He will enter anywhere and try to kill whatever is in there, which is why you have to be careful where you let the dog hunt loose. He is dug to on a regular basis. I appreciate you not having these problems keeping plummers but when you have little dogs that are too game for there own health then you have to be responsible. I wouldnt put this dog out to stud to the majority of Border bitches but I would like something off him to hunt cover that was a bit large for getting to ground. This is not a money making venture I should add and our pure kc Borders are never sold but kept by ourselves which is why they are a good strain..I hope that clears things up..
