That is what you can expect when using dogs to drive boar and is another reason to make sure the guys you shoot with are safe shots. One slip-up like that could ruin a whole trip for all the guns and make a big hole in your bank balance. Some hunts 'introduce' the dogs to the guns before the hunt starts, particularly if any of them are dark. A few years ago it was the done thing for dogs to wear chain collars or shoulder harnesses with spikes on them but that was to protect the dogs from the Boar. But that has died out now as they found that such things can sometimes hinder or even trap the dogs in undergrowth. As for anything to make the dog more visible, I have never seen anything like that as they rely on the guns being able to tell the difference between a dog and a pig, even while snap shooting. The locals tend to give us quite a lot of credit for our hunting/shooting ability as they don't all realise that we don't go through the same sort of training courses to obtain a hunting license which they have to pass before being allowed to hunt. In a lot of the European countries it is fairly easy to obtain a firearm but to use it for hunting is a different matter. Dougy Posted December 22, 2013 Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 As you say Ed regarding snap shooting, you dont have much time to ;- see some movement, shoulder the rifle, track the target, check the target then decide to take the shot or not. And all that in very very few seconds and your heart is banging hard against the inside of you chest trying to get out.
