its horses for courses, I love my beretta 687 and given a choice would use it for all my shooting. But if I used it where I use my Winchester sx3 out in the mud, salt and sand it would ruin it. I don't notice the action cycling and wouldn't appreciate the extra recoil of the o/u when shooting the big cartridges. So for me the semi auto will always have a place in the cabinet.

It's a personal choice and semis won't be for everyone. It does wind me up that people look down their noses at them but at the end of the day a gun's a gun and a good shooter will hit with a cheap old semi what a bad one would miss with the finest Purdey. I used semi auto weapons for nine years in the army so when looking for my first shotgun a semi auto was an instinctive choice. I also own both an O/U and a SBS but prefer the semi but that's just me.

I take on board your points around picking up empties (nine years on military ranges makes that instinctive too) and agree that more people could invest in a safety flag, I use mine religiously! As for using them on clays at the end of the day you need to be competent and safe with what you're using in the field and that's what I though clay grounds were for. At the end of the day in my opinion (and I'm not saying this is the case here) it often comes down to snobbery.

Franchi AL48, only kicks like a mule, if the recoil/friction "brake" on the mag tube isn't allowed to work.

It has a little friction ring that is taken off, and turned around for using light or heavy load. (Takes 2 minutes)

As said earlier the mag tube must be OIL FREE, or the friction brake does not work, and it will not

eject the shell case efficiently. I've Had one for ages and it has no more recoil than my little SxS.when set properly.

Semi's can be a bit of a faf if they are not working properly. For clays I use my Baikal o/u, it just fits me and never

ever goes wrong. :)

I haven't seen one semi owner pick up their carts at my local ground and I got so fed up with being hit with spent shells when on DTL I moved a position further down.

I can see the advantage of them in a hide and if people need multiple shots (FAC versions) but I just think they're a PITA on the clay ground and not enough owners have / use the safety flags for my liking.

I always pick up i carry a Napier Bigfoot pick up tool.... its like dog owners who let there dogs **** on the footpath its bad form to leave your emptys all over the place...have a word with them...

:yes::yes::yes:

It ****** me off just the same the lack of consideration of some other semi users, I endeavour to pick mine up, so does my lad, just good manners the way I see it, that often involves picking up other lazy ******* cases as well! :good:

I tend to be the only person using a semi at the clay grounds I visit. Based on the number of spent carts on the floor when I get to the stand I can only assume that too many O/U ejector users think it is beneath them to pick up their cases. Several thousand pounds worth of equipment and clothing and they can't be ***** to spend a bit for a magnet on a stick.

I had an Ithaca auto donkeis years ago, that kept breaking but boy could I shoot it! Shame.

Funnily enough, I bought my first semi - an M51 - last year and broke the slide without actually firing it. The Yanks tell me to replace the buffers as well as getting the slide welded before trying to shoot it.

They tell me that the M51 shoots softer than a Remmy 1100. I hope that, if I ever get it working, that I'll not be dissapointed.

Regards,

Mark.

So Boxing Day I went shooting with my cousin he took his dads semi a browning gold iirc a gas auto with speed load. What a bloody faff! Bought a slab of Olympics known (from previous bad experiences) cycle in this gun well being punchy and 70mm at forhill (nice ground bit muddy) had a couple fail to go bang, no biggy but the faff of the semi OMG what a pita it was possibly the only semi there (sorry to the regulars) cases bouncing everywhere hitting him in the head off the side of the cage, bobbing around in puddles.... Loading is a faff, anyway...

The last stand I tried the pogo stick!!! OMG how do you use them all the time??? Banging and clacking away wobbling in the shoulder I missed the second bird every time as I couldn't deal with slapping about it felt awful! The recoil felt worse than my OU admitted I was shooting off the wrong shoulder with one eye closed but it was truly awful! And that was only with one in the mag!

Went out again today to cannon and had a lovely morning some good stands some diabolical springing teals some manual rabbits (had the pair in one :) ) the semi was out again and a few more here a lady shooting an escort having real trouble working the gun and hitting anything a chap on the skeet (ok it was into the sun) who would have better off throwing the carts spraying empties all over the shop!

I have been so happy with my OU even if I shot like like plonks and hit 14 on the skeet!

End of rant thankyou for reading !!!f

This doesn't bode well. To be fair, though, I *had* done my homework and I *knew* that they had weaknesses before I bought it. (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Ithaca fan, see?)

Oh, *I* could miss with *anything*...

best wishes with yours.

Thanks. I may well need them.
