Buying A Shotgun

When I first started, I set a budget of around £300-400 to buy maybe a s/h Lanber or such. Then I thought for just a couple of hundred more I cold get it brand new.... budget's now about £500-600 !

Then I went into a gun shop and tried a few o/u's and fell in love with a s/h Beretta - I paid the £695 off in three instalments ! It's an s686 Special and came with 7 (!) chokes and a hard case, so I'm quite happy with my purchase.

I was shooting with some friends at Broomhills yesterday, and everyone commented that it was a lovely gun.

I think guns are a bit like cars - long ago the expensive cars were the only ones to last; your Fords, etc, would rot away at the wheel arches, bottom of the doors, etc. But now even cheap Hyundai's are a good car and do the job well, and with some comfort.

£600 should get you a decent gun, either new or s/h, but if possible, take someone along with you who's knowledgeable to check fit, etc. You never know, a few "erm, well..."'s between the two of you may even get the price down.

Good luck,

Steve

I'd recommend you go to a clay club and try a few of the members guns if you can. Most shooters will let you fire their gun for a round to see how you like it. I learned with a Beretta, so went and bought one. They fit me well, so I shoot better with it (or at least potentially I could :) )

Buying a gun is like buying a pair of shoes, make sure you get one that fits you, it doesn't matter how much you pay for it, but its not fitting correctly your not going to hit anything with it, make sure you talk to a proper gunsmith or someone who knows about fitting a gun, a shooting ground would be a good place to start, the brightest shiniest most expensive gun in the shop may be **** to shoot with.

The nicest gun I ever shot with was a Browning B80. The guy that owned had it for 17 yrs and he bought it second hand and at that stage the previous owner had put about 15,000 cartridges through it. It was an ugly looking gun anyway despite the rust and the scratches, but it was an absolute dream to shoot with.

Hope this helps.

One of these would be a nice the gun in the picture, click on the picture to get a bigger one, this gun is the 28" model although I plan to get the 30" model because I prefer it, it has got 3" chambers not proofed I think for steel shot, and she is multichoke.

A good gun for £699 brand new.

Or you could pick up a second hand berreta silver pigeon for around the £600 mark if you keep your eyes open.

Or have a look at gun traders website, you never know there may be a decent offer on there.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I was rummaging through the guntrader website & saw a couple of interesting guns on there. Can anyone tell me the difference between a Browning 525 classic Game & a Browning 525 Grade 1 Game? Both have 28" barrels & fixed chokes. Is it just a case of wood quality & engraving?

Cheers

TT
