JDog Posted May 17, 2014 Report Share Posted May 17, 2014 The hen pheasant sitting on ten eggs in the garden has deserted the nest and the eggs have been going one by one. I suspect hedgehogs or rats. Certainly not corvids as the ones remaining are intact. That news is tempered somewhat by a find this morning of a second goldfinch nest in a shrub against the house. Both goldfinches nests have five eggs. A wren is sitting on a large clutch in a nest box, there is a robins nest somewhere in a large viburnum fragrans shrub and the blackbird has a second clutch going, the first having been taken by carrion crows. I suspect too that there is a goldcrest nest in the 40' conifer but I have yet to spot it but I have seen the birds. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Longchalk Posted May 18, 2014 Report Share Posted May 18, 2014 Out rabbiting this week and I walked by an ash tree that was making a high pitched sort of electronic whirring or buzzing sound. Turned out to be a brood of woodpeckers. Two sizeable fresh holes about 20 feet up gave the game away. Couldn't believe how loud they were. garden gun Posted May 19, 2014 Report Share Posted May 19, 2014 Blue tits in the nest box, baby blackbird in the greenhouse, feeders taking a hammering from parent birds grabbing a quick high protien snack in between feeds..................squizzers and corvids looking for a cheap lunch, .22 lead aspirin at the ready.
