Loads of people swear by it. You can buy some ready made here:

It is just a mix of readily available (at least in the US) ingredients.

Crikey, i make up a gallon, costs about £15, that will last you years.

1 part Acetone

1 part White spirit

1 part ATF

1 part Paraffin

Mix it together That's it.

Funny thing is, the hardest part I can think to get hold of is the paraffin, can't for the life of me think of anywhere round near me that would sell it.

look up the acetone on the net - fleabay, amazon.

Paraffin and white spirit - B&Q, garden centres.

ATF any auto factors

It won't affect the bluing but avoid any plastic bits.

Great stuff for plastic fouling.

Is kerosene (heating oil) not paraffin?

If not, garden centres will keep it for greenhouse heaters. My local garage also sells paraffin extra and pink paraffin in 5l containers.

B&Q it is for the paraffin. I don't think there's a garage left near me that sells it any more. Acetone is easy as there's a couple of beauty supply places locally.

Is there a specific type of ATF that anyone recommends, or is it just a case of buying what's cheap?

I get my paraffin from B&Q.

ATF needs to be Dextron II or III

Made a batch up using the above recipie and works well,

Dumb question, do i need to use gun oil after cleaning ?

  • 2 weeks later...

I made a big batch of this stuff a few weeks ago and I'm really impressed. It definitely speeds up the amount of time it takes to clean the barrels of my shotguns. I don't know if this cleaner is actually any better/stronger than regular bore cleaner but it's just so cheap that you can use plenty of it and not worry about how much it's costing, or that you've got to buy some more. After using the Ed's Red I finish off with a light coating of gun oil, although the formula does contain a light oil in the form of the Auto Transmission Fluid.

If anybody is interested, you can buy Acetone from Boots the chemist from behind the pharmacy counter. I'll never buy regular bore cleaner again!

Just be aware the the acetone will evaporate over time, it'll be the first one to go from the mix so if you find after many uses the product left isn't working as well as it did add a bit more acetone.

You could use nail varnish remover as the main ingredient is acetone.
