Is a Beretta 686 the same as a silver pigeon?

I bought my 686 second hand in 1989, paid £640

It was described to me by the seller as the lightweight 'field' gun version, it has an 'L' on the trigger guard and is a multichoke. Narrow rib and just a single small silver bead.

Anyone shed any light as to exactly which model I have? Thanks.

you wouldn't of lost any money on it in that time either, in fact its worth a bit more now than when you bought it.

I had one and sold it............Stupidly B)

I have owned a number of the 686 & Silver Pigeon, I believe the 686 have better grained stocks, wood to metal finish and overall better finished - This is just my own personal view.

I know an old post bit I compared my 1986 s 686 special which is in beautiful condition to a brand new silver pigeon and it wasn't even in the same league? The wood the scrolling etc wasn't even half as good?? I was shocked as assumed it'd either be better or at least the same?? Saying that I know they do so many variations so don't know if it was a lower spec?

Your SP came from the good old days when they were far better made and will outlast you!

Basically they are the same gun with a few minor alterations which as far I was aware/could see , was mainly to do with altering weight and for manufacture.

Like all makers they think that people will rush out and but the new model as it is "so much better " than the last one . So the alter the stock , ribs and engraving change the number /name and finish . Put some even more fancy looking chokes in and a new plastic box .

I did not like was the ceramic forend instead of  metal which to my mind had built in obsolescence which they seemed to be producing .

OK I plead ignorance. What is a ceramic forend? I have searched and can only find reference to ceramic coated forend iron!
