It can be used with or without the built in IR, but using IR, I could see out to approx 85 yards. Using extra IR increases the range, and I tried it with my NS800 and could 'see' out to 150+ yards. It could be fitted to a scope, using a DSA, to make it into a night sight. I would say that it's Gen1 but very good. I'm not sure of the make, but it's in perfect working order.
