Easy hit bead

They help with gunfit, but I never see them when I shoot.

I agree about Ruby Sights - advertised on the big auction site. They are way cheaper than Easyhit, but of almost identical construction - I can't tell them apart.

I will declare an interest - the importer was the late Graham Stephens - a good friend. His son took over after his death.

I must admit to being a little mystified as to how these beads work and have been very quick ( possibly unfairly ) to dismiss them as nothing more than a gimmick. I really do believe that if there is something on the end of your gun attracting your attention, then your complete attention/focus can't be on the target, where it needs to be. If you don't know where your gun is pointing then surely it doesn't fit you?

When shooting my full attention is on the bird and my muzzles are only something I'm dimly aware of peripherally, very much like pointing your finger. As the late great Bruce Lee said when pointing at the sky: 'if you concentrate on your finger you miss ore that heavenry sprendour'. :) But I may be wrong.

I use a ruby to correct centre dominance on both guns. The glowing dot is hidden down a tube so it can only be seen by the eye looking down the rib. True it may be a bit of a crutch for me but the last time I was shooting someone else's gun I missed considerably more.

I was hoping that it would help with my gun fit....my instructor confirmed that the gun fits me ok but you can still mount it slightly differently...I was just hoping this may help so you can tell straight away if you have mounted it wrong or not....plus won't it help on knowing where the end of the barrel is for determining your lead?

That's how I regard the function of a shotgun bead, as an aid to gun fit. Otherwise, in my opinion, you're aiming the gun rather than pointing it. You are correct, you can mount your gun differently each time you mount it, and that's where practice comes in. Ten minutes every day, in front of a mirror. The way I do it is to stand with an empty gun in front of a mirror, close my eyes and mount the gun. Then open my right eye (if right handed) and look in the mirror to see where that eye is in relation to the rib. Nineteen times out of twenty it's in the right place, looking right down the rib with my eye showing just above it.

If it isn't then just adjust your mount each time you mount the gun until you see the desired picture. Repeat this exercise until it becomes habit, muscle memory will take care of the rest of it. But it pays to do it regularly. Hope this helps. Others may have other methods or routines, but that's how I do it.

I put one on my wife's gun as an aid to her mounting the gun properly. She really needs a stock adjustment and that is next on the agenda, but in the meantime it helps her make sure that she is looking down the centre of the rib and not along the inside, which is what she was doing.

I was going to fit a centre bead for the same reason, but sticking on the wee light pipe was both easier and easily removable.

Ironically though, the fact that she knows the gun doesn't fit her properly she is paying it more attention and it is having a poorer result.

The main worry about these is exactly what you describe here. The eyes can only focus on 1 thing at a time and the bead is drawing attention away from the target.

If your gunfit has been deemed to be OK, I would practice gun mount until perfected and the gun comes up in the same way EVERY time. If you do this in front of a mirror, you can see if you are developing any bad habits such as dropping your head to the gun instead of bringing your gun to shoulder and face.

I think it would be fine if she was not so conscious of the gun not fitting as it should, if she mounts it comfortably she is looking down the inside of the rib, so the easy hit bead helps to make sure she has her eye over the gun properly, but it isn't natural. The answer is of course getting the gun fitted properly, which will happen soon.

For those thinking about getting one for this sort of reason I would be wary as it can become the focal point. For those maybe just struggling with eye dominance or just wanting something a bit brighter in their peripheral vision then I am sure it will work fine.

Personal I think your not helping your wife, get a gun fit so she's not fighting the gun and possibly experiencing excess recoil. The bead is for eye dominance it's effectiveness is another matter it's not there for gun fit.

I agree and the gun fit is next on the agenda. She has had a lesson with a good instructor to rule out posture and setup and the addition of the bead was really to help her establish that her eye is over the centre of the rib, but it means she has to lean her head over the stock and it is unnatural. Her instructor, by his own admission, is not a stock fitter.

It was never intended as a long term fix, it was to help with dry mounting practice really until such time as we can get the gun fitted properly. Part of the challenge was finding a good gun fitter in our part of the world, but had a good recommendation so that is where we are going next, the chap that has been recommended is called Andy Coull if that is at all familiar.

Thanks for the feedback though :)

Easy hit are a waste of time IMHO gun fit and eye dominance is the issue as stated by many. I've seen so many clients who have had a "gunfit" by who ? A gun seller ? They are there to sell guns. Go see an experienced coach it may be your eyes and a trip to a shooting eye specialis may be required. I personally use shot spot for myself and clients. I had awful.issues and took the beads clean off now all I see is the trg.
