tx4cabbie
May be heading to Poland this summer with a couple of mates to visit ww2 sites, thinking auchswitz-birkenau, treblinka, warsaw ghetto. Had it signed off by lovely wife, would prefer to go with her as she is a history buff too, and more decorative than them by far, but she doesn't fly and it's going to be a quick couple of days so driving is out. Any advice from the pigeon watch hive brain about where to go, what to see etc? Saw on net that several companies offer shooting "experiences", way overpriced probably but beggars can't be choosers, and I've not shot a centrefire handgun since the mid 90's, and have never shot an smg or a machine gun of any description - anyone done this, was it well setup or were rounds pinging past your ears from the drunk stag party in the next booth? Any advice gratefully received, never been to Poland, looking forward to it, but really want to shoehorn as much as possible into 2 or 3 days, Inc some range time with toys we're not trusted with anymore. Thanks in advance, Leon the cabbie.
Blunderbust
It will all depend on which air port you land at. If you want to base yourself in Warsaw then Chopin airport in Warsaw would be your best bet (Ryan air, Wiz air and Lot all fly in). The other airport is Modlin which is a 40 min drive into Warsaw. I would set my mind on one area to visit the concentration camps and would recommend Auschwitz - Birkenau but you would have a long journey to get there from Warsaw and you need a full day to get round both area's so accommodation in the area would be better. If you are only doing 3 days then by the time you cover Warsaw and the concentration camps including the traveling you are not going to get much more in, to be honest with you. Your other option would be to cut out Warsaw and fly to Krakow which would only leave you a 1 1/2 hour bus ride to Auschwitz.
tx4cabbie
Thanks for the advice, will look into it further. I'm happy to visit krakow as I've been told auchswitz-birkenau is the one to see, and there is a range there too, just got to convince my mates
oowee
If your in Krakow make sure to do salt mine its awesome. Auchswitz birkenau with the anniversary would have extra impact. I go often through Krakow to Slovakia (family visits) they arrange Bore shooting and have a large hunting fraternity. Pigeon and crow shooting is mostly not allowed and interesting that I hardly see any. Boar even
Willxx
Warsaw is lovely the old town and castle amazing especially when you see how it was left after the uprising. Not sure of any shooting opportunities but there must be plenty Personally I didn't go to the camps, I am well aware of what went on there - the idea of them being on the "ourist route"I find distasteful. I have been to Auschwitz on 3 occasions each time taking different members of the family, its anything but distasteful in fact it should be mandatory, to consider it as just a tourist route item is simply wrong, been to Warsaw as well the uprising museum is a must as is a visit to the palace of culture. digger
agree with KW. sadly when I visited Auschwitz there was a coach load of Jap tourists taking photos despite the many signs indicating not to. given their record at the same time in history it was macabre to say the least. Simply the most thought provoking place I have ever visited. Poland is a very welcoming country, the food is fantastic at a great price ( wild boar is cheaper than a burger ) and the women 😊
