Mole with shotguns

Guys, I do a variety of shooting across my permission, where one farmer has asked me to knock some moles off and be fair they are everywhere making a right mess.

I don't any traps so just asking if anyone has some good advice / methods using a shotgun (I hear you gasp, point the gun at the hill 😃😃😃)

Mainly what time of day are they most active or what's the best weather conditions etc.

You can see one of my efforts on Hallo Charlie.http://youtu.be/Zu4GTe6LMOQ.

Thanks.

no offence but your suggestion is stupid and you must have a screw loose and a lot of spare time if you plan on sitting in a field with a shotgun to shoot moles when and if they pop up. Go buy some traps and make an appointment with your doctor........

Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill

you need to flatten the hills the evening before

go to the site 7am if no activity wait until they start working - approach very softly or on quad or in truck.

if they have already pushed up earth return 3 hours later as they work on a 4 hour cycle, unless there are fresh hills they may still be working.

shoot a third of the way up the mound as the mole is working, you can see the earth rising you need to be close 1 metre or so away.

wear rubber gloves and after you shoot remove the soil quickly to reveal a dead mole.

a very effective method when you get the hang of it, there is usually one mole per set of workings so you can visit various sites in a rotation

Thanks for your valued input, I'm always pleased to hear both good and BAD views. Clearly you don't have as much land and time to shoot as I do . (one permission being a doctor so I will ask him if I have a screw loose tomorrow).

For the record I spend about an hour just having a walk in the morning stretching my legs and lung with my shotgun in hand before I tuck into nice breakfast, I was purely seeing what others do, whilst pottering about enjoying my day out in fields.

Thanks and enjoy your day.

to be honest mate, your best option is to use and set some mole traps, in all the years I,ve been shooting I have never actually seen a live mole thowing up soil, its a nice way to spend ya time out with the dog and the shotgun but you will be lucky to see a mole working,

take no notice of the silly replies mate from the rimmer, his name speaks for itself,

get traps and enjoy the walks out

It is mate, normally with the Spaniel running about so not always apparently wasting my life waiting for a mole to appear.

Lol, I have 2 Spaniels now (1 is 12 weeks) so the morning walk isn't quite the relaxing stroll it used to be but I know where you are coming from.

Yes, it can work. I remember Dad getting one in the garden back in about the late 1950s. But not a load in a field. He either used grandprix 4's or home guard blacks (used for lifting carrion off the nest at the back of the house). Not sure of the load of those black cartridges, but he only ever used his top lever midland gun co from the open choke - and not the older underlever 12g - for those.

Edit seems like the home guard cartriges were solid ball (from ampthill site on home guard?)

I've had plenty of moles with a 12 bore. One of our paddocks is clearly visible from the kitchen, and only 50 yards or so away. If I can see a molehill moving/growing, I can get the gun out of the cabinet, grab a couple of cartridges, and go for a stroll.

Any cartridge will do, doesn't need to be a magnum load.

Approach the molehills very quietly, not clumping about. Moles are pretty sensitive to vibrations. Then wait for the molehill to move again (quite often the mole will have gone to get earth from the diggings, so it can take anything up to 5 minutes). When it starts pushing up soil, point the gun 1/3 of the way up the hill, close to the 'moving' earth. Fire. Then go get a spade, and see if it's worked.

That's what's it all about mate, there's no rush, enjoy it, love seeing the dog running around like it's going out of fashion.
