Glen Garioch (pronounced Glen Geery) at Oldmeldrum.

I lived in Meldrum back in the 80's and bought 4 'empty' barrels from the distillery to use for garden planters.

My neighbour helped me saw them in half and while doing so we got a cup of whisky for our troubles. We sat in the garage and drank it...no health and safety then.

I wonder if it was like this, https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/2174/glen-garioch-1958-46-year-old

I bought 2 Jura barrels recently and got half a gallon free. No idea what strength it is but half and half with water and it still knocks me about. Smells absolutely heavenly!.

You've tried it and reckon its great which is good enough for me, most of the time the expensive ones go un tasted (certainly by us mere mortals lol). As has been said just because they have sky high figures on them doesn't mean they are in anyway nicer to taste than a 40-50quid bottle. I have a bottle of Rosebank that's currently sitting around the 550-600quid mark, I will put money that a 100quid bottle will be better tasting whisky, but I aint going to find out as its being held as an investment. Its only worth 550-600 quid because there are very few bottles left on the open market, not because its a truly fantastic whisky ;-)

Drink what you enjoy :good: but I am willing to bet your spot on and that Port Ellen is lovely!!

Cannae beat the £15L bank holiday specials :good::lol:  trying to chose between Singleton or Glenlivet for Midland game fair - I have a couple of Malt's stashed in the gun cupboard :ninja::whistling:

Im a cheap buy, love Jim beam

Flog this man,100 lashes. Jim Beam in a Whiskey thread

I used to find laphroaig too smokey years ago but my palette loves the stuff now the more peat the better, but only in the winter it just does not sip well in hot weather. Highland Park is a favourite and if i fancy a nice light malt the Glenmorangie gets an airing.

The 16year old Lagavullan ive bough two bottles on offer in Tesco at different times much to my wifes delight as she loves it its to dry and musty for me.

If the Glenlivet is the standard bottle i think the standard bottle of Singleton takes some beating, very moreish. Hate the Tailfire and Spey Cascade versions of Singleton.

Seen Monkey Shoulder several times but what is it like? Wife and I love a wee dram and wondered what it might be compared to? Where does the name come from?

It's a mix of 3 malts - Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. Probably best described as a lighter taste of the first two, but very smooth.

Bowmore 25

G&M Port Ellen 1982

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

Lagavulin 16

Talisker 18

Edradour Caledonia 12

Dalmore 15 Cigar Malt

And loads more. Had the privilege of moving (selling) some pretty rare whiskies about in years gone by. Tried quite afew expensive malts, but I seem to like younger malts in general. They ride a little rougher over ones palette, but pack more flavour. Or rather a more assertive flavour imho.

That being said I cannot stand the new NAS tosh that is being turfed out. The death of the Glenlivet 12 was a travesty.

How peculiar....just been given a bottle of Glenlivet12 and I don't rate it at all, below, in fact, a bottle of Aldi Glen Marnoch (think that's what it's called) I have.

You can give it to me if you like?!?! 😜

Whisky taste is subjective, and Glenlivet 12 was a good (not great) cheap entry level Malt. I was bemoaning the rise of NAS (non age statement) whisky. Eg Talisker Skye, Singleton Cascade, Glenlivet Founder's Reserve etc etc. Instead of expensive whisky in a cheap box, you're now getting cheap whisky in an expensive box.

Perhaps it's progress, and I'm a dinosaur. But I prefer a good whisky, with a mark of quality, that's why age matters to me.

Interesting, thanks for this. How do you rate 'ordinary' 12year old Highland Park?

I went to a blind whisky tasting event at the Queens Hotel Cheltenham a few years ago.

There were about 30 whiskies to taste from £500 per bottle to £15.99.

There were over 100 of us tasting whisky and we had literally a sip of each 1-30 between noshing a twiglet or something similar and then had to mark our top 5.

The Togouchi Chugoku Jozo at £35 a bottle took top honours followed by a 12 year old Chivas much to the shagreen of the kilted and bearded expert, who abruptly declared 67 % of us peasants !

I bought 4 bottles, two of which I still have.

Whiskey and wine, like women are purely subjective and a nice Grouse just slightly warmer than body temperature is as good as any imo.

Actually you may be able to help me identify a particular brand...I used to visit a retired General regularly every other Friday and drink his whisky, primarily because he couldn't drink it himself and liked to have someone enjoy it...I cant for the love of me remember what it was called. I've looked for it in all the good outlets but to no avail.

All I can recall is that it was 25 years old came in a black box and he used to call it affectionately " old sardine"

Any clues..

It was rather nice..

Crikey, that's a tricky one! Honestly not sure.

Anymore info, Malt, blend etc, bottle shape might help

All I can remember is that part of the word sardine was I think, on the label something like mullardine or similar. :hmm: That's why he called it old sardine
