Finglas
Hi folks, Not sure if I'm posting this in the correct area but hopefully it's okay. I am in the Glasgow area (just outside actually). Basically I am looking to learn how to shoot. I have no idea how it would unfold but id imagine id need to learn on clays before I had the chance to shoot live quarry. I have only ever shot on occasion at the Scottish Game Fair, nothing serious at all. Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows of any shooting schools or clubs around the Glasgow area or any websites that outline where all the clubs are (if there is such a thing) ? Thanks very much, Appreciate any help.

grrclark
Finglas, what side of Glasgow are you on? The North Ayrshire Shooting Ground just outside Dalry is one of the best grounds in Scotland with a wide variety of disciplines on offer and a great mix of target presentations to suit novice to expert. They would be a good place to start. Their website is www.continentalshooting.co.uk Great if you are on the south west, but a wee trip if you are on the north east. Finglas
Thanks very much for the help folks, appreciate it. Grrclark, I'm in East Kilbride but it's not too far to the east that north Ayrshire would be a problem. Google maps says it would be just under an hour to get there. I'll check out the websites Thanks again
grrclark
You should do it in well under an hour, it takes me about 90 mins from fife and EK is half way. It is a good ground and their lessons are inexpensive compared to some. Get your application for a shotgun cert submitted now, book in for a lesson or two, they will give you all the basics on safe handling, etc and they have a great gunshop and will be able to help you out buying the right gun for you when the time comes. They do a good bacon roll too which is always a bonus.
Finglas
That's brilliant , sounds really good, looking forward to it. From what you say it seems I require a shotgun cert even to learn on someone else's gun is that correct yes ? Or is the shorgun cert just to purchase a gun when the time comes ? Thanks very much for help
grrclark
You don't need a cert to get lessons, the ground have an exemption that allows you to shoot the gun unlicensed whether it is with one of their instructors or if you go with a mate who has a certificate. All that happens is that you have to spend quite a bit more if you are with one of their instructors. If you have had a go at Scone and you enjoyed it then get your application in now, I don't know how long the process will take on your side of the country as it differs all across Scotland, but best to get the ball rolling. Once you get your own ticket and gun then you can drop in any time at North Ayrshire and pay as you play. You get a card to take around the various stands that counts how many clays you use and then square up at the end. There is lots of advice on here about going through the application process, but it really is straight forward and nothing to worry about, unless you are a rogue and a scoundrel There are a couple of other shooting grounds in central Scotland, but I would recommend North Ayrshire as a great place to get started. clanchief
There is also a ground at Morton that might be nearer at Livingston or a Sunday club at Falkirk, at Houston nr GLW airport there is a sporting ground every weekend.
