roadkill
Would like some advice on getting my lad ( 10 years old ) into clay shooting, So last week i bought him his first 20g and have taken him to Doveridge today for his first lesson, first time on a proper clay ground and he managed 12 hits out of 25.. I will take him every other Saturday for the next few months for a lesson at Doveridge but what other options do i have? Is there any clubs where he can shoot with other kids in comps , is there a special organisation he can join being such a young age? Any advice on getting the best for him would be great? Many thanks Jamie

Have you had a look at Kibworth shooting ground which is just south of Leicester .They used to have regular competitions throughout the year ,maybe drop them a line or a quick phone call to sort out any details you need .Heres the link and good luck. http://www.kibworthshootingground.co.uk/

bubble
Of the three photos above I like the top two But the last one leaves me cold, don't know why, perhaps an adult needs to be in view Edited May 25, 2015 by bubble

Shame as it is a nice ground. Why not look on the cpsa website and look for a local registered shoot.

motty
Of the three photos above I like the top two But the last one leaves me cold, don't know why, perhaps an adult needs to be in view I am not bothered by that bottom photo as regards to safety. I would like to have seen a better mount, though, as in the picture above. I would have corrected him, had it been my lad. The canted head and butt in the bicep area is so obviously wrong. Yeah he looks awkward and shooting like that is gonna hurt which will put him off! Edited May 27, 2015 by Paul223
bakerboy
The picture which shows the lad shooting the mount is much better. Flycoy "Russ" a great instructor works at Kibworth I would really recommend you get along to see him. Crowman's lad had a great lesson with Russ including Gun fit eye dominancesafety, and then of course actually breaking the clay which is what we all want to do. welshwarrior
Well if Doveridge is fairly close I suspect Garlands and Oakedge won't be to far either if you want a change but Doveridge is a nice ground as well.
OddJob
The main competition is the schools challenge organised by the Oxford Gun Company. Great competition, look it up and PM PM me if you want any more advice as I take my school club to the competition.
Salopian
At ten years old the boy has a lot of growing to do. It is important that he learns the basics of shooting correctly . Safety first , stance and gunmount , all can be taught for free and need to be learned. Find a local friendly shoot where you can shoot 25 to 50 clays every week and he will soon make progress. A weekly lesson can be an expensive route to go down and dependant on the experience of the tutor may not be value for money. Take things slowly at first and go along at the pace of the youngsters enthusiasm.
roadkill
The gun mount is terrible in the house picture but this is when he first got it, I kept trying to tell him his mount was wrong but he would go back to doing it, we now go to the doveridge young guns session on a Saturday to get him proper instruction.. Glad I did take the picture as even he can now see by looking at it how uncomfortable it looks with him holding it that way. Many thanks all Jamie

Many thanks all Jamie I'd bet a box of shells your lad has a left master eye , I was 9 when dad bought me my first air rifle and I can still hear his fits of laughter as he tried and tried to prevent me from trying to line the sights up with my left eye . I was in my 20's and into shotguns by then before I clicked as to why I had contorted myself like that but it was simply instinct taking over and trying to use the master eye. ShootingEgg
The gun mount could all be down to a slightly long stock for his size. Nothing that cant be corrected though :-)
kiffy
i love seeing kids getting into shooting, i started far to late.. and shotguns especially late being over 40. going of subject a bit and its something i know nothing about as ive never had a lesson, although i think i may this summer to try and rid myself of bad habbits.... if hes having lessons from one coach, would going with another coach in between mess things up? i mean if hes being taught stuff in stages or how ever it works and then sees someone else...
