Any ideas on South Yorkshire renewal turn round times ?

My SGC runs out on 27 Feb 16. I got the renewal letter a couple of weeks ago and sent forms back completed.

I'm told they have 1400 renewals backlog and half the staff they had 12 months ago.

I'm just wondering what the likelihood is of me getting it back in 16 weeks and not having to trouble my RFD for storage although the rumours are that most RFDs locally are turning folk away due to full books.

Has anyone any recent experience of renewals in the county where last year they had no idea who owned what guns and had to write to us to find out!!!

I knew staff had been cut but wasn`t aware of the backlog. I`m just about to apply for my FAC so that`s not good news

Once the date passes hassle them for an S7 temporary certificate. If your forms were in on time they have to issue you one.

If you do need an RFD to hold your guns for a while I know one who has space.

Thanks, if it comes to having to lodge them I think I will be transferring them to a mate rather than have them kicking around at an RFD. I very much appreciate the offer though. Thank you Edited by ashtons99

I've heard various things, some directly from the horses mouth, others from fellow shooters as well as through personal experience.

From the horses mouth (a couple of weeks ago) - they had backlogs and still do to some extent and were suffering from staff cuts but had taken on two new junior staff who were in the process of being trained. I was told that the backlogs are significantly down on what is rumoured and they are doing everything they can to resolve past issues and provide an appropriate service.

I have heard that some permission grants go back many months but I have no personal experience of that or anything to back up whether it's the truth or not.

I personally know shooters who have waited anywhere between 3 and 6 months for a new FAC/SGC but variations are being turned around anywhere between 10 and 14 days as I and a number of friends have experienced this first hand in the last few months.

In terms of renewals, BASC have always recommended getting them in around somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks I think (can't recall the exact time frame) but one of their firearms officers recently told me that they have a triage process firmly in place which looks to move renewals through smoothly and based on any intelligence they have on the subject, medical records, etc (the usual stuff) and that where possible, those that are deemed low risk could potentially be processed through 'phone interviews and that personal visits will be carried out if also considered necessary. Just because you get a visit, it doesn't mean there's anything wrong and I understand this risk based approach is well established across various forces.

I think it's fair to say they have been under pressure - personally, I've always found them approachable and simply want to do their best in difficult circumstances and they're definitely looking to improve their processes. I hope you find the same but if you're unsure, I can't see them thinking you'd be out of order giving them a quick bell to see what they recommend in terms of when to get your renewal papers in.

Regards

  • 3 months later...

Licence ran out today. No new one yet. FLO contacted me to say admin should be sending it out to me in next couple of weeks. He did say they were still processing new applications from July last year and renewals which expired in December. I'm a very low risk so easy process apparently !!
