I have just had my new BASC magazine through the door and was surprised/annoyed to see two begging letters included, one for a dogs home trust and one for the Gurkha's. Both worthy charities I am sure but they have gone in the recycle bin as all begging letters do.

Do BASC get paid to send out these letters?

It's additional revenue for the publisher. Basc will sell them on the basis that their magazine is posted to their membership, which is X number of people. The advertiser will typically get a higher response than if the insert was put into a normal newsstand title.

For example, The magazine print, paper and postage may cost 80p or so to produce. If you can get 3 or 4 advertisers to pay £40.00 per 1'000 copies to put inserts in the bag with them it reduces the unit cost by 0.16p each. A relatively large percentage.

Basic are unlikely to even be aware what's going in the bag with the mag as very often with this type of publication the advertising revenue will be generated by an external agency, who take a percentage and pass the rest back to basc.

They do. It's cheaper for the advertiser than taking a full page advert in the mag. The charity will print millions of Letters and break them down into batches which are then sent put to be put into a number of different publications.

Yeah, and I don't even like Gurkha's, I always pick them out of a Big Mac.

Crikey, you lot can be miserable at times... They're both worthy causes and if you don't want to donate just pop them in the recycling. No mention of the two commercial companies advertising literature then?

Well excuse me Mick, I quote from my op, "Both worthy charities I am sure but they have gone in the recycle bin" :whistling:

If you don't like the editorial content of the mag then the best bet is to get in touch with the editor of the mag at Marford Mill

Its as easy as coming on here and posting about 'tat' and will be way more effective

David, my o/p was nothing to do with the 'editorial content' it was about the begging letters that came with the magazine. Pay attention please

Indeed, and others have answered the point succinctly and correctly but my view is that some others were indicating the content was not up to spec ' hence my post

David :good:

Appreciated but it would of been nice if you had answered my o/p as I did start the thread.
