rodp
It certainly needs to change, no argument there. The funding model does need to be totally reconsidered too, but I would still like it to avoid being completely commercialised. I think there is still a need for a public service broadcaster and I do passionately believe that the Beeb are genuinely world class in many respects and I am proud of that, patriotic soul that I am. Grr, I think this is another one we'll never agree on (one of several ) Probably neither of us is right, as we really will never know all the facts. The beeb is like the proverbial black hole, it sucks all in and lets very little out Nice to hear your views though

Good debate and discussion is always good, so long as it is respectful.
The Mighty Prawn
It's like British steel, the railways, British Road services etc. A thing of the past, dead, defunct, deceased. Good examples, those three are doing so well since privatisation aren't they! If there is only commercial broadcasting you only get commercial programming, natural history programmes would go, local radio just turns into background noise with adverts, news only covers stories that don't show their parent company, subsidiaries or sponsors in a bad light, that is not a future I believe in. poontang
As poontang pointed out some of our tax goes towards football, rugby, etc, . Whoa there cowboy...that's not what I said. I said policing costs for football matches comes out of the police budget...as does the extra police costs allocated to any large event. I don't think you can say our taxes directly contribute to the coffers of football clubs, as that's simply not the case.

You must have missed this bit A thing of the past, dead, defunct, deceased. They were obviously past there sell by date, once state funding had gone they could no longer survive, for whatever reason. Why should we fund them, why should we pay inflated salaries to folk who specialise in not earning them?

Ah yes but none of that compares with the x factor on the commercial channel. If this thread is anything to go by.It seems we are becoming a nation obsessed with cheap American sitcoms or the rubbish they call reality. Penelope
In part the licence fee will go to towards footballers pay, the Beeb buy the rights to say, the FA Cup (rounds and final). The money from those rights will go to the clubs, hence the footballers. Damned good point! Could you explain your last statement please.
