frustrating people

Been out crow shooting with my dad today had 3 signs made for the footpaths asking people to keep to the footpaths because there's shooting in progress. Big yellow signs head hieght bang on the paths with big dopey arrows pointing. In the 5 hours we were there we saw 11 separate people not one keeping to the paths. Just amazes me people think they can go anywhere that want even with people shooting shoguns. Xxxxxxx frustrating. Anyone had similar encounters

I have been sitting in the hide and had walker pass between me and the decoys, (they were not on the public path)
they slow right down and look at the decoys, say a couple of words to each other and walk on looking back in amazement,
when they are about 100 yards away I let off a shot (naughty)
if I can see them coming far enough away I will stay seated and let the gun off
they usually turn around and get back on the foot path, got no time for them, all you get from them is 'well we are not doing any harm'
That's usually after I have given them a lecture about sticking to the foot path.

At a Local clay shoot in the summer we had a cyclist appear from across a field and where we were shooting towards he didn't seem to have a care in the world donned in his Lycra body armour lol we couldn't believe it

:hmm:I have the same with my best rabbit shooting ground. I can be sitting quietly tucked into the hedge looking down the hedge line and have dog walkers appear behind me. Its the end of sport for at least half an hour. We have some foreshore and the level of public use (without access) is dissuading people from shooting it.

Frequently.

The 'freedom to roam' brigade believe just that: nobody can tell THEM what to do and where to go.

Unfortunately, most that want to use the 'Right to Roam' are completely unaware of the wording of the law and what it does and does not allow. If they are on private land WITHOUT permission, then they are trespassing.

I usually end up speaking to these people so I always leave a gun in a hide or give it to a shooting buddy and walk out to meet them. I politely ask them where they are going and then I tell them where the footpaths are. In some cases it can be a genuine mistake and people are fine with it, but very occasionally you meet a knowall anti-shooting eejit. I quote this back to those 'special cases' if anyone tries to roam off the footpaths on my syndicate's land: https://www.gov.uk/right-of-way-open-access-land/overview

Had this yesterday on our shoot having never experienced it before.

Mid drive a couple apear having being warned by radio from the beaters.

Sleeved the gun and walked across to escort them to the path and the exit to the farm. The bloke waves a map at me and says he was just following it. I suggested that he was not doing it too well as he was on private land with no right of access.

He understood enough of shooting to understand that my walk across to escort them resulted in me missing a shot or two at the birds that flew over my peg.

No sorry or thank you but as ever you take it on the chin

I don't really mind ramblers so long as they don't deliberately interrupt my shooting.

A couple of seasons ago I was standing gun on an old disused railway that dissects our rough shoot and it is often used by people walking into town from a caravan site further down the line.

While stood there on my own I spotted a woman some way behind me who looked very unsure of whether to approach or not. I couldn't blame her really as I was dressed from head to foot in dark shooting clothing, had on a hat and a snood over most of my face to protect me from the wind chill and was holding a gun. I waved at her and beckoned her to come nearer after unloading my gun and pulling down my snood but she still looked very unsure. I continued to beckon, and she obviously couldn't hear me in the wind, but eventually hesitantly walked up to me looking very lost.

As I've mentioned before I have the appearance of your local terrorist and she still didn't look convinced as to how safe she was even when I smiled and asked if she was heading into town. She was, and said her husband had gone on before her and she was going to kill him if she eventually met up with him again, for leaving her behind.

I told her to keep going the way she was and that she would meet up with several more people with guns further down the line, but it was perfectly safe as I would ring them to inform them she was on her way through, so there was to be no shooting until she'd passed through.

She seemed very relieved and thanked me before continuing on her journey.

Everyone she met smiled and said hello to her as she passed apparently.

I have no idea if she approved of what we were doing, or not, or whether she was totally indifferent. Have never seen her since. No harm done.

Mate used to control shoot ferrals/rabbits in a big park. After gates where locked he used to put out hazard tape plus signs around the areas he was shooting (sub 12lb are rifle). Very few people took any notice of his warning signs to extent that he told the park authorities that he would not do it unless there were park attendants onsite.

At Barton road MOD range just outside Cambridge, there's a public footpath which runs right through it and you need two people to man sentrys either side to stop the public from wandering infront of the guns!

I've never had a stroppy encounter when doing sentry, but i know some have.

ps.This was where the firing range scenes from 'Full Metal Jacket' were filmed.

Not this time of year but in the summer put up notices saying the adders are very bad tempered so stay on the paths and keep dogs and children in check.

Not many people will keep walking past one of those

Did something similar years ago...

.......KEEP OUT LARGE BULL ON HEAT....

.....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED....

It did the trick

Sad to say seems to be the norm these days?

General Ignorance, the obvious view that meat just comes in little boxes from the supermarket and the view that they can do what they want where and when they want because they are more important than anyone else?

IMHO, will only get worse as the rights of the individual seem to be given more weight than the rights of the majority in today's unbalanced society?

Ok if there actually is a bull present, but the owner of a farm I often shoot on received complaints for leaving up a 'Beware of the bull' sign when there was no bull present. I wasn't aware it mattered but apparently it does.

One of my farmers told me he was advised not to use the 'beware' sign as it suggested, in law, he knew there may be a problem with people accessing the field and would be liable for injury by recklessly leaving a dangerous animal where the public might pass. It was suggested he left a sign that said 'bull in field', letting people make up their own mind.

If its true the world has gone mad.

I have found that putting up signs makes the more likely to stumble your way as alot of the people are that stubborn and twisted that they like to do the opposite of what someone tells them. Put a arrow pointing down your lane that your shooting on and write on it Christian Worship and Bible Study and they will run the other way.

That was the range we used during basic training, and I remember doing range sentry there in the middle of February very well.

Had some snotty woman today trying to tell me i was breaking the law by shooting too close to a foot path, when i asked what law that was she said the one that say you can't shoot with in 500 meters of a foot path. When i pointed out that she was mistaken and it was 50 feet not 500 meters she jumped in before i could finish and said well your still less than 50 feet from the path! She wasn't too happy when i told her that the path she was on was not a public right of way and she was in fact trespassing

My son and I were sighting in a .243 on one permission. The land used to be used by hang glider folks, (farmer has now stopped it). We put out a target at 100 yards, my son took aim and I had to stop him from firing as the hangglider pilots were swooping down in front of the target, brave or dumb, you decide.
