Dasher
Well having just got back from a walk with the dog and family my son asked if I could open a box for him, sure no problem, hand on pocket to remove knife only to be followed by that sinking feeling......it's not there....ohhh it's fallen out. So someone has probably just found a near new Buck Bantam for new year. I always carry pocket clipped knives with the knife in the pocket and clip outward to reduce the chances of if coming loose but it obviously doesn't always work. Anyway I'm after some advice for a replacement so here are my requirements..... 1 Must be lockable 2 Must be Stainless Steel bladed, hopefully 440, (without any stupid coating) 3 Blade length between 8-10cm 4 Reasonably thick blade for heavy use 5 Must be plain edged and not serrated 6 I prefer drop point or straight edged blades 7 Plastic or rubberised scales for easy cleaning Ohh and under £25 Any suggestions please Dasher

Dasher
Thanks Jega, that looks like it should fit the bill.
kyska
You need all those points to open a box?
Duckandswing
I like schrade knives. Heinnie Haynes have several. They are bomb proof with nice thick blades.
Zapp
I know it wont hit all your requirements, but if you havent tried them before, consider a Mora. I bought my first last year after getting into stalking, having being a sworn Opinel user for 30 years (the majority of my shooting is rifle-shot rabbits) but having found that the point on those isnt all that good for the job where deer are concerned. The one I got was about £12 and is a great little knife.

I carry an Opinel as a backup knife, use an extra thick Mora for GP work and cut down my old Clippa to 3 inch to use as a neck knife along with a modified plastic case for safety
tx4cabbie
I used to own a Crawford casper from crkt, and whilst it was a ****** to sharpen, as the steel was mediocre, it was built solidly, the Lake and Walker reinforcement of the liner lock gives you a reassuring feeling of safety, and the clip was unlikely to come loose accidentally. The steel on mine was aus6, renowned for being poor, the steel on the newer one is probably better, get a diamond stone and thin the blade back a bit, and for less than 20 quid you'll find it hard to get a better knife. Good suggestion, Jega. The enlan knives coming out of China are good quality and inexpensive, obvious copies of pricier American blades, but I got a copy of a benchmade axis lock knife for about 12 quid. As Mora do not make folders some people have taken Opinels and fitted an adapted Mora blade to get the best of both worlds. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1006253-Another-Mora-folding-project Edited January 2, 2016 by TIGHTCHOKE
Savhmr
Mora or Opinel. Mine have seen years of service.
moorvale55
I use Mora and Opinel. In 2014 I wanted something a bit different and unique so my son bought me a knife kit and I made my own just to suit me.
Dasher
I probably will replace it with the either the Casper or another Bantam, just thought I'd ask for other peoples suggestions as you never know someone may have a better idea! I do carry an Opinel frequently, especially for paunching rabbits, but for a multi purpose farming work knife the blades are a little thin. teal27
I've just bought an opinel with 3 1/2" lockable blade from my local gun smith for £8.50. Very impressed with it so far, sharp and very solid knife for the money
clanchief
I would suggest an Eka knife, their new version of the old Super Swede should do, I've had mine for over thirty years and it still outperforms all knives I have ever had or been offered a try of, from all the stalkers I have handed it to to gralloch laughed, then said that is the best they have ever used, it's sharper than a scalpel two said even using it to remove the full bladder intact like a water balloon, they are around £40 but worthy extra if you can stretch that far. rjimmer
Mora or Opinel. All the way! You can get the Mora with bright orange handle and sheath. Opinel are available in stainless, and so cheap to replace.
rimfire4969
My favourite knife brand is Fallkniven, fantastic knifes you pay the price but for extremely top quality materials.
Salop Matt
EKA Swede 8 with orange scales and Opinel number 6 are my two pocket knives!
srspower
I don't think Moras are very suitable for shooting purposes because the scandy grind means the bevel is far too wide for skinning and gutting purposes in comparison to a full flat or saber grind. If you want a really good quality fixed blade knife that is easy to clean, has high quality sandvik steel and holds a fantastic edge with a saber grind then you can't go wrong with an Eka swingblade. Mine is a little on the large side for small game but does the job really well none the less. And the added bonus is that you get a gutting/skinning hook with it. For a small blade you can't go wrong with an opinel, I love my number 9 in carbon steel once you have forced a patina with a lemon it doesn't rust and with a 40 degree bevel it is scary sharp. oowee
I have one of the opinel knives and i would not recommend it. It easily gets gunged up which can result in it not properly closed in your pocket. The locking tang is too stiff which can make it unsafe. Its not single handed. Its very lightweight makes it less efficient when used to sharpen larger sticks (hide tent pegs etc). They are cheap and you do get what you pay for.
