What to do in Bangkok

I cant remember the name of it but the Elephant place just outside Bangkok was worth a visit. The floating markets aren't what they used to be, basically selling a load of tourist tat now, but worth a look if you don't have anything else planned.

We went to a restaurant called 'Condoms and Cabbages' which was recommended, to be honest I cant remember what it was like. The thai waitresses have a knack for spotting a half empty glass and topping it up pretty quick. Chang Beer in a frosted glass, fantastic.

Have a look a a few temples, the reclining Budda one was nice and they are all incredibly ornate

Its right that the thai people will try all sorts of tricks to steer you to their mates shops , restaurants or tailors, but its always done in the nicest possible way. We found the Thai people absolutely lovely. Bangkok felt safer than anywhere else ive been, and don't believe the hype an=bout it being a smut fest. The thai people are really quite prudish, however the red light bits do exist but there is lees on show than a European equivalent like Amsterdam.

You'll have a great time

Forgot to say, the city has possibly the cleanest air you will ever breathe !

:) The air must be pretty thick in east Kent, I was in Bangkok in the early eighties coming back from Australia, I loved it, there was a large open market serving amazing food a great place to eat with the locals, but i was on my own and not quite 50, I envy you the sunshine, cold beer, great food and the chance just to see some of the beautiful women that reside there :good:

Can't help with the Bangkok side of things but a warning about the beach part. Be careful if you hire a jet ski etc they'll try and charge you for damage and after a heated debate a police officer will be passing who will get involved and make you pay for the said damage.

Hope it helps

If memory serves the profits from Cabbages and Condoms go to AIDS research, or support.

It's a great place! I would suggest taxis over tuk tuk's thoigh as they are the same price but you get air con in the taxis!

There are some great roof top bars to visit, find them on trip advisor.

We booked a street food walking tour of an evening. It was a really great way to get our bearings on the first night as well as an introduction to the types of food!

If it's a weekend you're there , check if they still have the market. It's bleedin huge . You can get anything from a Rolex to a fighting cock.

A lot of it is under cover and when you go passed the food stalls the smell is quite something, well it was for the other half, she had to get out before she was ill .Might of been the fish bits they were frying.

Going to Thailand next week for my big 50 for two weeks with the wife and two other couples.

Spending 3 nights in Bangkok then 11 on a beach in Krabi.

Would like to plan the 3 days and nights in Bangkok so want to ask those who've been what you recommend. Whether its a nice restaurant, bar, site or experience, I'd be interested to know. Other than first night at a restaurant we haven't decided anything yet.

Cos

hello Cos, what airline company are you flying to thailand ?????

I go a fair bit. Kickboxing. The reclining Buddha , Kings palace and Wat po all good tourist stuff. When in krabi either Riley beach or BOOK IN ADVANCE gilhams fishing resort for a few days.

Google it. And allow 100 pounds a day for fish bait to nail it.

I went a couple of years ago. It took me 3 days to calm down enough to feel relaxed about the place.

Once you get the hang of it it's a very nice place and very nice people. You do need to practice your firm but polite "no thank you" though.

I found it rather intense for the first couple or three days.

As for the air being clean???? I don't think you were in Bangkok or you live in somewhere rather nasty. I'm not saying it's bad but it's not that good either.

Bike hire guided cycle ride. It's easy and see parts of the city you would not otherwise. Usually includes feeding giant koi and small rowing ferries, great fun.

Dinner at Cabbages and Condoms. It's a restaurant in the centre that supports a farm co operative that seeks to help former working girls.

Don't take a river trip but get on a river bus ( follow locals and not the touts) it costs next to nothing and it's very authentic :)))
