Spot welding needed for magazine

Recommended Posts

I have a magazine that the bottom plate has broken off, ideally I need a tad of spot welding. Any idea's from PW will be appreciated.

I have tried soldering but wasn't strong enough. Is silver solder stronger and where can I get some from.

Thanks all.

Silver solder is a lot stronger than lead (or whatever substitute they use these days). I bought a small pack of silver solder rods and some flux off ebay a while ago for some small jobs on a motorcycle restoration. You'll need a small blow torch to melt it.

if you have attempted to soft solder it you cannot silver solder or brass it so welding is the only option

hope this helps

I think if you get it red hot first it burns off any solder residue :good: (Same as galv)

Dougy - i have a spot welder if it does need that. Show the mag to me at Catton and we'll see. I could post it back.

Other than that Rob's suggestion of TIG.

brazing is a bit full on

or stand it up downrange at Catton and Sparkie will weld it with a 22-250!

sparky may have a 22250 welder but you have a 220 plasma cutter lol

Silver solder or tig

Clean any remaining solder attempt first

Think I'm right in saying it needs to be tidy because big blobs or braze or mig will interfere with fit

Ps is it a m55 mag

Yes it is so it's very very precious. As in very rare and virtually impossible to replace.

I've heard people asking and getting over £150 for them. I actually have a spare one.

I'm off to fruity's he's going to have a look at it tomorrow.

Say good bye to it now, as soon as he strikes up his tungsten, mag will have massive hole in it

Thought so, yes then silver solder or very tidy tig or it won't fit back in the base plate

For that sort of money I should start making them!

Silver solder is a lot stronger but a couple of small tug should work fine Rob will be able to do that no doubt. Never fell for spot welding probably be fine as we.

There's a market for them, may not be a huge one but there's plenty of folk out there after them. Specially the 5 shot mags.

You can use epoxys for some of these repairs. Mig next to useless tig no filler is neat and is capable of doing Stanley knife blades sharp to sharp in the right hands

I was going to use Devcon as I've got a couple of tubs for bedding, I'll see how it goes tomorrow at fruity's. Then I'll go the resin road.

I am telling you, let Fruitloop play with it and it will end up in the bin
