I'm in the process of replacing all 4 tyres and when taking off one of the back ones I noticed this cable hanging down. I'm not sure if this happened while I jacked up the quad or the last time I used it. Can anyone please tell me what this is / what it is for. And how easy it is to fix. There seems to be some kind of liquid on the end of it, oil perhaps? Really appreciate your thoughts as need to get this up and running ASAP. Please see photos below. Billy. Posted March 5, 2016 Report Share Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Axle/diff breather. I extended these on one of my old Defenders. When you drive, the heat generated by the moving parts causes the pressure in the casing to rise, so these stop a build up in pressure. Extending these is advisable if you take your motor through lots of water, as there's a chance the cooling of the water on the hot metal can draw water into the axle/diff and emulsify. Extending them to a higher point than the current end point is best, but just lengthening it will help. Don't waste money on 'kits'.
