Alex C
Me and Mrs C are off to the lakes for a long weekend with the two dogs and Kids. Will be staying with parents in Eskdale. Last time there we took a day out for a nice long walk and decided Scafell was the obvious choice. We enjoyed the walk but it was a bit of a slog all the way up there then all the way back down.. We are looking for a nice walk of about 4-5 hrs which will take us into some nice scenery. I've done Blentcathra before and enjoyed that as it was a climb and then levelled out, but this would be no good for the dogs. Suggestions for a nice tramp in the countryside would be very welcome
felly100
Get yourself a Wainwright guide for the area. The Ravenglass railway is worth a go.
FalconFN
Cat Bells is a nice one if you don't want it to be too strenuous but still a proper fell. You get a ferry across Derwent water, climb Cat Bells then ferry back so you get a bit of fell and lake. Spectacular views from the top too. Agree with Felly, definitely get a wainwright book or two for details. Edited March 20, 2016 by FalconFN
Alex C
I have the Wainright book collection so will have a flick through. Cat Bells sounds a nice one though. Can I take dogs on the ferry ? Yes the 'Lal Ratty' Lets just say its had more than its fair share of my cash over the years !! Cant not really as the station is a couple of hundred yards from my parents front door and I have two kids who love it.

Duckandswing
I think Haystacks is an absolute beauty and a stunning fell. Nice route from the quarry and not too strenuous. Plenty of tarns and a cracking view of Great Gable which is my favourite fell.
FalconFN
We are planning to do haystacks next week too.
figgy
Do cat bells but keep going and do high spy maiden moor onto dale head tarn, just before Dale Head tarn you take a right turn down gully between the two ranges and follow the waterfalls made by run off from the tarn. It's one of the best walks my wife and I have done with our dogs. Stunning gin clear plunge pools and waterfalls around four or five in total. You can then walk round the base of cat bells back to the start. Another good walk is the horseshoe round from Grassmere.
rovercoupe
The 591 is still closed so makes driving to north lakes better but longer!
Lord Geordie
Grizedale pike, follow on round the horse shoe!
panoma1
For me a visit to Eskdale at some point always involves a trip from Boot to Ravenglass and back on 'Lal Ratty' also plenty of good walks around Boot!
100milesaway
Loads of stunning walks around Tarn Howse,Watendlath and up Wasdale Head. You cant find a bad spot once you get away from the crowds which tend to stick around the actual lake areas.from Auntie.
secretagentmole
There's some clutch testing hills in that area aren't there? One place, Littlebeck, test your clutch on that swine!
Fatcatsplat
Aira Force is a lovely walk and anywhere around the Langdale Pikes is always fun You can make it as long or short as you want it to be and there's always the chance of a trout on the fly from Stickle Tarn
arjimlad
Glenridding Dodd gives the best views of Ullswater. Or you can get the steamer in Glenridding to Howtown then walk back along the lake shore... beautiful !
Fatcatsplat
Or have a stab at Gummers How at the south end of Windermere, followed by pints of loveliness at the Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank http://www.masonsarmsstrawberrybank.co.uk/masons/
keg
Or have a stab at Gummers How at the south end of Windermere, followed by pints of loveliness at the Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank http://www.masonsarmsstrawberrybank.co.uk/masons/ Gummers How is an easy one, you can park half way up it.. The Masons is now full of RR driving and shandy drinking southeners now. Great views from the top. Anglers Arms at Haverthwaite does good basic grub as well.
