A portrait of your dog

This is a watercolour of our cocker, Bertie, that I commissioned for my wife's birthday recently.

The artist has done quite a few dogs and having seen some of her work, I decided to get this done.

The likeness is perfect and she really captured his spirit.

If anyone is interested in something similar please get in touch with me and I will put you in contact with the artist

I don't doubt the dog is a cracker. I just don't particularly like the painting - the eyes in particular.

motty bit harsh...says great likeness to his dog...presume that was why commissioned, sorry you don't like OPs dog but if he does......all good

All art is very subjective, and I think it's a good painting. The only criticism I would have is I'm not sure the shadow is very convincing and I think it wasn't present in the photo' and has been added by guesswork; never easy.

It's still a good painting, and if the OP regards it as a good likeness then that's all that matters.

I don't do pet portraits anymore, ( nor commissions of any type actually ) although there is good money to be made from them. I have a friend who specialises in animal portraits but it would drive me nuts.

I know what you mean motty, it's that same look the wife gives you when you should have come home to take her shopping, instead you are still in the field shooting pigeons you bad boy.

Got nowt to say sorry about. The painting may show a likeness of his dog, but it would certainly not be a perfect likeness. As I said before, I don't particularly like the painting. The other paintings shown in this thread I like more. Is that ok?

I would never expect you to say sorry.
Mighty mariner says the likeness is perfect and as its his dog I will take his word for it.

A bloke I worked with had a picture painted of the two horses that his wife had. When he showed me the picture I thought that one of the horses heads looked bit sort of long and thin. A real odd look about it. I mentioned it to him and he said that was how the horse looked, so there you go. Anyway he took the picture home and gave it to his wife for her birthday present. Now bearing in mind that she was a right cantankerous person anyway with a permanent thorn up her rudder. She took one look at the picture and said that it didn't look anything like the horses and she threw it out in the back garden. He should have given her a sour lemon for a birthday present. He took the picture back to the artist complaining that she didn't like it and the artist just said well that's what they look like to me. it's all down to interpretation see.

The tricky thing about animal portraits is getting the likeness. Owners know which is their dog, cat horse, budgie or whatever, but to many people it's just another dog, cat horse, budgie.

You can paint the exact colour, fur pattern, stance etc but if there is just one element of the head out of proportion with another, then the likeness wont be there.

I can see what you mean along with other odd dimensions but it's all subjective and in the eye of the beholder. this is a bit like the reflection of the window on the tv screen that you never noticed and now you cant see the tv for the reflection. Unfortunately for this thread it may have put other posters off showing their pictures for fear of some bright spark criticizing the beloved pet. I notice that there was a nice picture of a spaniel that has been removed from the thread. shame that.
