Honestly if you want a gun for your missis and the kids to perhaps utilise it latter, buy a Hatsan escort 20 bore auto, they have that stock with the recoil pad shim system it can work from juniors to big blokes no trouble.

I got one 6 years ago now, all three of mine used it, as first guns from 9 years old, and now i have it for me brilliant little gun it is patterns best 20 bore i ever had.

Cheap not beautifull but it just keeps spitting them out, dont listen to the decryers get a new or real nice one, and seriously it will do what you want as long as you want to keep it .

Why do people see anything other than a 12 bore as a compromise ?

The reality is a 12 bore probably will be too much for anyone of that height and build, someone of small stature and light framed will struggle to comfortably use a 12 bore even if it's a lightweight game gun, it won't make as much sense as a 20 bore, last thing you want is the enjoyment taken out of shooting at the start by struggling with something way too big and clumsy.

I would definitely agree though in not choosing her gun for her, same as anyone buying a gun, point them into certain areas like a nice 20 bore Browning 525 hunter ( deciding between a 12 and a 20 for myself :) ) but it got to fit and feel comfortable to them as they will be shooting it.

Quick blog from a fairer sex's perspective which may be helpful on fitting also on the master eye bit.

  • A 12G will feel heavy to anyone who has never shot before. It's why we start off with 25-30 shots, the instructor hands the gun to you and loads and takes it off you between shots. I lift weights and by golly! did I know about it after my first few rounds of shooting.
  • The human body is capable of lifting vast amounts of weight if we practice. There are tiny little women who lift 100kg because they've built up to it. Any woman who practices will get used to a 12G and be able to use it as she wishes.
  • The Syren range is not cheap. That's why it doesn't get recommended here. But on a point of order, I know a lady who had one of the first Syrens in the UK and she's 5' and slightly built and she switched to it from a Silver Pigeon 20 because it fitted her so much better. Tanya Faulds whose (game) gun the original CG Syren is based upon is a tiny delicate person to look at. The Fabarm Syren might suit someone who wants a 20G.

A survey of Bun Club members shows that the split between 12 and 20 gauge guns is approximately two thirds/one third, with a few having both, depending on what is being shot. There is a small but consistent number of ladies who start off with a 20G but then get into shooting and change to a 12G because they now know how to shoot and can handle a 12G. I only know one who downsized from 12G to 20G and that was because of injury. The women out there shooting with 12 gauge guns prove that the idea a small woman is too weak to manage a man's gun is rot. Look at the female Colts and Juniors in clay shooting, they use 12s. Why do people put about the idea that holding a gun should be immediately comfortable for a beginner? You need to learn to shoot at least a little bit first.

The claim that the majority of women are left eye dominant does not fit with the scientific evidence and the available peer reviewed research. I've seen research showing that this fact is not true. I've never seen any showing it is true, and I wish people including **** ******* would stop repeating it (he never replies when asked about this assertion).

My thoughts on the matter these days is that a well fitting 12G is better than a 20G, but you'll have to buy a 12G in order to chop it about to make it fit. Pitch is the most critical issue and the one that affects the resale cost more. The thing that really governs gauge choice is use. If it's primarily clays, get a light well-fitted 12G. If it's for field use then a 20G if she likes that as it's less to carry over a long period of time.

If you can get your wife some time under instruction with different instructors and different guns she will get some experience and start developing an idea what a good gun feels like to her.

My wife (5'2" tall and 8 stone) uses a Silver pigeon in 20 bore.

A 12 bore is just too 'nose-heavy' for her to be able to use without having to lean back to counterbalance the weight.

My 6' husband uses the same gun for clays because he's what my father calls a swivel chair warrior, and he prefers the lightness of the barrels. Although he does like my competition gun and has suggest we could share (no).

My wife shoots her SilverPigeon S without any problems - 5'3" and slightly built. A lot of problems are psychological, she looks at my gun and says "I could not shoot that" but I have waved her gun around and there really is no difference!

Edited to say, apart from fitting. We had the stock shortened on her SP and she loves it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mrs Buze shoots a Browning 425 20g, with a movable comb, but she does have a bit of 12g envy.. I just bought a AYA coral o/u 12g that is just 50g heavier than her gun... She will definitely need the same comb mod as the 20g for it to be all comfy, but it's really nice and dinky, it might be the ticket to 12g for her... Worst case, I'll shoot the AYA as it's so lovely

We've tried a few others, like the new beneli 828u, and the browning ultralight alloy, but the AYA seems to be fitting a lot better, we'll see how it goes...

@ehb102, from your survey results, any model/make that are favoured by/for ladies?

Lots of Silver Pigeons and Browning 525 and 725s. I think that's because of the price point and because very few gun shops will sell you a Lanber or a Lincoln if you don't know what you are looking for. Syren gets some honourable mentions, from all different shaped ladies (although they are all on the short side). I've seen a few Ultralights out there too. The really competitive women shooters I know shoot DT10s or Perazzis.

My girlfriend is 6ft and uses a 20 bore. She occasionally tries out one of my 12 bores which she can shoot no problem she still prefers the balance and weight of the 20 but I guess she has become used to it.

Probably the only way to solve this issue is if you post some pictures of her, that way we can gauge her build and reach a sensible conclusion. Don't forget that baggy clothing can be misleading so perhaps a damp T shirt or a bikini or a basque with those little lacey suspender belts.......

Yeah right, so like typical skeet attire???

The op's from Yorkshire, not Essex......

Mrs G had a play with the Guerini Syren at the Northern Shooting Show and really liked it. Was a couple of quid short of the £2.5-3k asking so bought her the skeet vest instead 😄
