ditchman
On one of my sites near liverpool (litherland)...whilst excavating for contamination i found 12 of these stones...Granite (i think)...they are all a similar size...the site boardered a canal ...and before the canal there was a stream...... one side of the site was a small gasworks and this came from the other side of the site...where we were testing for live pathogens...(CLUE) it is 17th 18th century......... no prizes....sorry.. FalconFN
A stone for heating water, once the stone was heated? I thought that but there's no cracking of the surface. I also thought is was something to do with cotton - loom weights and the like, but that's not right either. It's a long shot but cold they be stones found in the stomachs of whales processed in the area??

ditchman
Right....you are just about there..................... the reason we were testing for live pathogens was the fear of Anthrax spores still about as it was a felmongers/tannery since Tudor times...up to the late 18th cent'......there was a stream that was dammed and a leit came off it to a waterwheel that turned a large wooden drum into which was loaded the stinking soaked hides and these Granite stones and was left turning to soften the hides and remove the hair.....................there were 10 or so brick lined pits where the hides would soak...and we dug them out and christ they still stunk like hell after all them years............ well done ........good thought process...
