Quote:-“It has now been made quite clear that GPs should only respond to the initial police letter if they have concerns about the applicant. The police request that any such response is forwarded within 21 days.

“GPs now have clear guidance in respect of a lack of response on their part which states that if they do not respond to this letter within 21 days it will be assumed they have no relevant information and therefore the application will be granted.” End quote.

This part is very important if, like me, you have a GP who at my last application simply couldn't be bothered to reply to the police request for information. Also it took the firearms office six weeks before they chased it up and then only at my insistence.

This is indeed good news, my wife is a Dr, not a GP, but in discussion has said she'd be very uncomfortable sanctioning firearms applications.

Not that she thinks the Dr shouldn't be involved, but a blanket yes or no for ALL applicants is not a GP's job.

Her thoughts are its useless unless there are salient mental issues, it's really up to background checks and referees to guide the police.

Do any of you remember when the local bobby was asked what he thought? I do because I was one. If my memory serves, two local feet on the ground coppers suggested the Dunblane shooter should not be allowed anywhere near a gun of any kind but a higher placed senior officer disagreed and sanctioned his FAC. I think similar in Hungerford etc etc. BUT of course we don't have local bobbies who know everyone on their patch like the old days because the over educated fast tracked senior officers don't feel they are value for money ...OK Rant over BUT very relevant to the discussion.

I hope that more shooters see what staff at BASC are doing behind the scenes for their sport. Thanks for the heads up on this.

i find this very interesting i was at my doctors the other day after seen her about something she started to talk about this as she was my REF for both my SGC and FAC . she is getting lots of forms for air rifles now as this has come in now in scotland , she says lots of young men are appling for there ticket and have not been into see her for years , and she says she does not know what they get upto,. i have a great doctor and get on with her very well . and any money that is made from form filling goes to our local RNLI . ...
