Now that was a good day.

Friday was the designated shooting day this week so I was up early and ready to go out by 08:45, first I stopped off to get a slab of shells and then continued on my way to the farm.

About a mile further on a Muntjac decided to commit suicide by running into the path of the car in front of me and ended up on the grass verge, now not being one miss out on a bit of fresh roadkill I claimed it and put it into the foot well of the car.

When I arrived at the farm the I checked that it was ok to get the Muntjac sorted before going out into the field, so it was gutted, skinned and sectioned up and placed in a cool place for collection when I left.

While this was going on I could hear someone shooting and the farmer confirmed that yes there was another shooter on site so we should compliment each other by sending pigeons from one end of the field to the other, he was set up in the middle of the field so I set up in the hedgerow a good distance away and set the decoys out in the stubble.

Within no time at all the birds started coming in and as it always seems to be I missed the first ones in my haste to make up time from the Muntjac saga, I then settled down to some good and regular shooting only to realise that I had not put any extra shells into my bag but had left the slab I had purchased on the seat in the car, d'oh.

After a long walk back to the car I returned to the fray and continued where I had left off, did not seem to notice much coming my way from the other side of the field from the other shooter but they were coming fast on the wind and a few high shots went down well.

The best was 3 direct hits on a flock one after the other from the SX3 which has certainly endeared it's self to me over the past few weeks.

By about 15:30 it all slowed down so I decided to gather up, as I stepped out from the hide I tripped and landed on my chest causing huge amounts of pain which I could have done without.

First I cleared up the used shell cases that were spat all around the place (only downside of an auto) then collected 38 pigeons in total and bagged them up, ah now I was hurting even more and thinking how to get kit and pigeons back to the car, decision made so a walk back to the car and bring car to kit, sorted, 4x4 you ask, no Seat Ibiza hatch.

Car loaded and back round to the farmers house to drop off the pigeons, he likes them I don't, Muntjac collected and off home for some ibuprofen and a beer to wash them down.

All in all a good day was had, farmer happy as pigeons removed from fields and made available to eat, me good days shooting and a Muntjac now in the fridge/freezer.

Thanks for reading.
