I have been contemplating getting a few walked up days under my belt in December and thought I would go to the Morghew estate, but after doing a search for them on here, they don't get that good a feedback, the posts were from a few years ago, are they still not worth a visit or have they improved, anyone been recently?

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have not done a walked up day but a driven day mid-week 2 seasons ago as a singe gun purchase. Booked for 150 bird day and it was great shooting and no overage charged. The owner was welcoming polite and birds well presented. Great piece of ground that could hold loads of birds.

Laid back approach well supported by keeper and beaters.

Only criticism maybe that ducks were included ( this was communicated as part of the day) and they circled a bit which is not really anyone's fault its what they do. Live and learn

Hi Seadog,

I and some friends did a walked up day last year and a few of the evening duck flights(which arn't available this year).

The walked up was a good day, there were four of us and two of us (the ones who could hit a barn door) could afford to be selective on which birds we shot at as there were a lot about. (the other two must have had 30 shots each for the 4 game bird/per person limit) We also saw a number of woodcock and had a few rabbits each. At the end of the walked up day you can do an evening duck flight on the reservoirs (included in the price) BUT the duck are "very" wild and the few that came in were spooked by the other two novices!

I had my dog with us (and i know this is going to come as a surprise to a lot of people on here, she's a lab and can beat as well as pick up!!!!) which i would say you need.

Edit: need a dog to cover the thicker ground and flush the birds

2 of us also did two, just evening duck flights(Wild duck but reservoirs are fed). The first day, we saw nothing on the reservoir(1 of 2) we were on, except some swans. The owner was very apologetic and offered us a full refund or another day. We took another day and were joined by 2 other guns, and the 2 of us had 7 mallard, 4 & 3 and the others had 3 between them. The gamekeeper and two others were very helpful and with their dogs found all the ducks, even one that took quite a while and had travelled quite a way from were it was shot.

Funnily enough, there are 4 or us booked for tomorow(thurs 3rd) to do the walked up day, so i can give you a more up to date report tomo pm!

Ok, so today we went to the Morghew Estate. The day started at 8.30 with a cup of tea and a briefing by Tom (who I think is the owner). We were given a "do's and donts" sheet, along with a map outlining the 1500acres. It was a good briefing, outlining the areas we could shoot and what we could/could not shoot. Basically your allowed 4 game birds each, Pheasant,Partridge and woodcock. You can shoot as many vermin and "wild duck" as you like. (the wild duck can only be shot around the reservoirs, no duck on the main estate). Guinea fowl, Peacock/hen and hares are not allowed.

We were accompanied, for the day, by Heather and her working cocker, who works there. Which was handy, as we then had two dogs and someone who was familiar with the estate and knew where the birds were likely to be. (not that you need someone as the estate and map was very easy to follow)

We started on the reservoir and put up 7 mallard, which were quite a long way off but they turned and 1 ended up on the bank! We then did a few hedgerows(our choice) as we wanted to start slowly and from our experience the year before, wanted to spread the birds, through out the day. We all had at least one bird each and a few shots at others. My first (game) shot, with my new gun, saw a very respectable going away pheasant fold and fall!! :yahoo: ( and it was witnessed!!)

The next few walks were through the main woods and showed a fair few birds, enough for us to be selective with our shots. One of the group had a nice woodcock. We all had the 4 bird bag and could have had many more. At about 3.30 having all got our bag limit, 3 of us made our way back to the reservoir(the other had to leave early!) The duck came in as it was just getting dark, approx 6 dropped into the far reservoir and another fell on to the bank! A bit later a couple more dropped in to the near reservoir but it was quite dark and they were hard to see (thats the excuse that was given!!)

Edit: forgot to add that we saw a nice large hare,a barn owl, tawny owl quite a few deer, some peacocks and guinea fowl as well !

We had a very enjoyable day, my gun worked well, my dog worked even better, doing some great retrieves and some excellent flushing! The weather was good, we were in t-shirts at midday, and the surroundings and company were very good!! A good day all round!!

All the ones I have been on, you don't just get given a map and turfed out onto an estate. And as someone pointed out, £37.50/bird is pretty steep for a walked up pheasant. Any way, as long as you enjoyed yourselves that's what shooting is all about!

??? We didn't. As i mentioned in my report "Heather and her dog, who worked there" accompanied us. Or did you think i meant the dog worked there?? And compared to some areas £37.50 a bird may be steep, but we are fairly limited with our options and prices in the south east. It is a commercial shoot as such, and not a DIY offering a day to raise some funds.

Your paying so I don't see any reason why not. After all this isn't Sandringham. All of this nonsense about what gun you use goes way back to when 5 shots were the norm and it was considered unsporting to have that many shots at one bird or if you had a line of autos then it would be like a solid wall of shot.A gangster's gun. It wasn't all that many years ago that the over and under Was frowned upon. Only God knows the reason behind that one. Remember you have four birds so you want to be a bit selective.

What happens if you shoot more than the four? Do they just charge more or do they say"only pigeon and rabbit until the duck flight"?
