Weekends Non-report

After the frustration of not being allowed to shoot pigeons last week due to the game shoots I set out on Friday straight to the farms . Now last week I found approx twenty on the rape, this week one hundred and fifty spread over three trees. I parked the Disco in the gate and watched the field for thirty minutes, birds dropping in to feed but no birds joining , no flightlines to the field. I rang the farmer yes shoot but stay away from the pheasants!!!!!

Walked down the field to the position they were feeding and set up under a tree, the rape was very tall in places so I set up ten birds on cradles and two on the magnet, first shot, disaster, three flocks into one and disappear. I'd set up at 13.30 and stayed till 16.30 eight birds shot.

Saturday picked up DB 08.30 and started looking, picked up a flightline out of a local cemetery and tried to follow but it just dissipated and fragmented into lone birds. We continued over our normal travels with no birds evident . By 13.00 we had not seen anything worth setting up for. As we passed a local farm the farmer stopped us and asked us to shoot the crows on his silage clamp , it had approx two hundred corvids all over the buildings so we set up I used the hushpower to knock down a couple of decoys which then sent the birds in all directions. We built the hide next to the clamp and waited, nothing returned , I used the jackdaw call on my caller and the crows responded and two returned DB finished them off . We finished at 16.30 for the grand total of eighteen corvids, we dropped in at the farm and his wife said that two lads had a go on Thursday and shot lots of shells for ten birds!!!!!!!

Looking forward to next weekend when all these migrating pigeon fron Lincolnshire will have reached the midlands and stop for a rest??????

been there and done it many times, guess we live in hope even though from experience our head is telling us things are not right especially when it comes to winter rape.

Exactly, my heart ruled my head, it's a basic schoolboy error. No birds joining . Spook the birds and they collect into one flock and spiral up and away to pastures new especially on rape. Will I never learn!!!!!

A few more outings and a bit more experience and you will get the hang of it.
