jam1e
As above, i'd like some qualified "Smiths" to answer this one for me. (It's a snippet from my thread, along with another members problems far worse than mine......) In the picture, i can see the bad rifling, but i can also see cross section lines, in relation to the direction of the rifling twist. Is that a natural process made by rifling a barrel, or is this also evidence of poor rifling? Thanks. I've just been trying to take some pictures of the muzzle end of my savage rifle. It's no-where near as bad as Spartan's, however, it depresses me to see the state of the muzzle on my rifle, compared to say me Tikka T3... The crown on my T3 is sharp, with no burrs. Perhaps due to the amount of rounds through it? Withe regard to my rifle, the crown is not even 50% as good as that of my Tikka T3.... Also, around 1" into the muzzle of my rifle there looks to be a slight sharp edge in the rifling. This edge is covered in outer copper jacket. It really is disheartening..... As said, I love the rifle overall, and would be willing to pay a reasonable about to get the bore scoped, for a professional opinion. I'd drive to the area i need to within reason... And if that bad, or the longer distance doesn't tighten up maybe pay to have it rectified?? Surely if a .17 calibre is made from a "blank" it must have a finishing reamer, for that .17 calibre? Would that not be the tool used to finish the rifling?? Perhaps the tool that Savage didn't seem to have used to finish it's WSM barrels. Would the use of this finishing tool not sort the problem?? It's a cut from the following thread - http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/344111-anyone-on-here-own-a-17-winchester-super-magnum/ Thanks. deershooter
I would say that's chattering from the cutter that cut the rifling ,it does look like it needs crowning to sort it out . I have done many with a good engineering file .but an 11 deg crown done on a lathe would be better

Dougy
Jam1e, It looks to me as if its not been crowned at all, just rough cut for the blank length. I would seriously take that back to where it came from and request that it be re-crowned at least. On a bad day the muzzle would be implanted into something small and dark if I didn't get any satisfaction. .
welshwarrior
Rifling has chatter marks average at best crown is poor to say the least. Barrel may shoot ok but not with that crown.
