Highlandladdie
Could be the Quadrantid meteor shower? It is supposed to peak now. Where in the sky was it?
digger
I've seen a fair few. Better in places where there is no light pillusion such as Alaska or the Caribbean. Pretty impressive but a remarkably common occurrence

TIGHTCHOKE
Often it is small pieces of space junk burning up as they return to earth.

KFC
Every August there's a meteor shower called the Perseids. Try and find a place without too much light pollution and look straight up. We sometimes have a bbq and lay on sun loungers for a meteor shower party. https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/meteor-shower/perseid.html
Dirty Harry
I do quite a bit of night flying on NVG and see quite a few. I saw 10 or more in as many minutes the other night.

yod dropper
Have seen countless single ones, one exploding Disney style and one lengthy finger-thick orange blur. You can also see no end of satellites up there as well.
Highlandladdie
You might see the odd one, but as said before, at certain times of the year really intense meteor showers can be witnessed. Geminids, Persieds, Orionids, Quadrantids. Just knowing where to look is the key. For satellites and planets I can recommend ISS detector app for Android. Pay for it rather than get the free version, it is excellent. Also the NASA app has lots of good features, and I find the Phases Of The Moon Pro (again android and pay for it) brilliant. Agree, if there's little light pollution where you are and on a clear night. In these conditions I'd say I see them about 50% of the time while out lamping.
