anser2
I used to shoot a farm back in my teens at the westen end of the big lake that runs through your estate shoot Marshman. While we might get the odd bird or two during a days walk for a pheasant the most exciting shooting came at dusk as the woodcock left the woods next to the big lake and flighted along a big dyke , Blocker Run, that ran through the farm . The birds were usually low and very fast, weaving around the trees that grew along side dyke. ten or a dozen came most nights , but that number trebled around the full moon , but the best bag I ever made was 5 birds. I never managed a right and left , though my shooting partner did twice. The pair of us used to shoot for "the woodcock plate " , a fine bone china tea cake plate and which one of us shot the most woodcock kept the plate for a year. having about a dozen flights a year one of us needed to bag at least 25 woodcock to stand any chance of wining the plate. If remember right we each held the plate an even number of times and we were proud to hang it on the wall if it was " our year" to hold it.
