Mini fishing rods

As I'm going on the Norfolk broads this summer I fancy doing a bit of maggot drowning spinning etc while sat whiling away the hours and am looking for any recommendations for a mini fishing rod and reel. The pen type sixes under 1m long. I have various boat rods and telescopic rods that are far to long and big for me to even want to take.

Been looking at some that are less than a fiver on the bay, so long as it lasts a week or so but longer lasting would be better.

What have the Pigeon Watch collective bought used recommend.

Figgy, a short rod will not be much use on the broads, tackle control would be awful. If it's jus bits that you'll be after off the back of a cruiser, have you thought about a telescopic whip? Can be had very cheap from your local tackle shop.

4-5m extended length fished to hand should do admirably.

I had the pen rod and mini multiplier reel, while they DO work! I wouldn't recommend one for use over a long duration! It takes forever to reel the ruddy thing in. The novelty factor wears off very quickly.

I would also recommend a whip for poddling on with. A whip of 4 - 6 meters is more than enough for the broads. I once fished in a boat yard at brundall while we were moored there. In a little over an hour, tow of us had landed over 100 roach and perch.

Pole fishing is all about the presentation. As always, there is skill in something done well.

I do not get this fashion for fishing with great big poles I cannot see the skill in that at all you see some fish in the middle of the pond and just slowly drop the line in the the middle of them but then I an old and lived in the days when people needed skill to do things.

Modern telescopic rods aren't as bad as the older types. Millions of continental anglers use them.

For what the OP wants they would be the cheapest option and can be left ready rigged when collapsed. I've got six or seven multi piece travel rods and a couple of telescopic rods. When I stop off for lunch while out on my mole trapping jobs I'll often get a telescopic spinning rod out of the van and chuck a lure for an hour or so.

Done the broads a couple of times on a boat it's nice and relaxing.

I used to call in a shop in Potter higham grab a cheap pole with rigs and some bait, saves taking it with you!

Was all you needed to fish off the boat when moored up, had some cracking roach and good size bream like that.

One thing you do need is a landing net it's a pain to get them in otherwise!

I would avoid anything telescopic, I would go for a half reasonable multi part rod instead, they have come on in leaps and bounds.

For example.

+1

They get stuck halfway in my experience - I've lost count of the number of telescopic rods I've chucked away broken or jammed. Sounds like you're after saving space, but it's worth using the right gear for the right job - Get yourself a 5 or 6 foot Ugly Stik - Awesome and unbreakable

For the pen rods, give them a look on Youtube - They're a bit of fun, but not really fit for purpose.

I bought a rod on the way down to Devon from Exeter Angling, turned out it was a short kayak fishing rod.

It was peanuts and not badly made but the salesman insisted on making a hoop out of it before I left shop - old school QA :)

That and one of my old faithful Mitchel 300's and we had a great time hauling mackerel in.

I can't see the point in mega cheap tackle, its a shame to look forward to your days fishing only to be let down by inferior gear.

For bait fishing a multi section whip. I've a 2.7m one I bought for 99p and a 3m one for £3.99 from Aldi and I've had 12" trout leaping from the river on them plus decent perch and more. The multi section ones pack down much much smaller than those with just a few sections, off the top of my head to about a foot.

I got one of those 2.7m whips from the Poundshop about ten years ago. I used to take two or three pole winders fastened to the handle with elastic bands, each winder had a couple of simple rigs wound on. Some had small flies such as PTN or GRHE and others were rigged for worm or grasshopper baits. It fitted in my rucksack and came out when I was walking on the moors above Sheffield or on the North York's moors. Brilliantly simple and very enjoyable fishing, and as you say; it is surprising how big a fish it will handle.
