Gamecrop farmer Price

Recommended Posts

Just curious what price you pay farmers for game crops ?

We've to try and negotiate to get a few pieces of cover crop in this season either we put it in ourselves or pay .

Just wondered if we purchase pieces of sown wheat from the farmer how much we might be expected to pay Him , obviously one or two bits are already drilled but would be the ideal spots.

£200 to £250 an acre about average. But , as said if you are buying the crop as planted then he would be expecting 3 to 3 1/2 ton to the acre ...of course if that strip was against a wood or high hedge it may not produce that and he may be happy to take less. All down to how friendly a relationship you have. odds law, those unproductive strips are never where you want them for game cover.

It really depends on what the ground is like where you want the cover and what cover you ideally want opposed to what you would settle for, that strip of wheat at a reasonable price may be a lot less effective than a strip of maize and kale which will be warmer for the birds, better cover and provide food for longer.

Best bet go to the farmer asap and just have a chat with him, explain what you in an ideal world would like and see if he can accommodate something along those lines.

Assume rent is in the 200-250 mark to start off with, after that you got ploughing, working down, drilling, plus seed, fertiliser and sprays. depending on how busy he is he may be able to do all the ground work, but if you a member with their own kit willing it would be even better.

If you go for the buying a crop of standing wheat I think you be looking a bit more than £500 and the difference on top of the rent will be enough to get a crop of kale in and a long way to maize if that is an option.
