Certificate waiting time

Why can't your fac and shotgun cert be linked to your driving license or passport or national insurance or even shooting insurance. Why can't the police privatis the procedure ok certificate costs would increase but a national database would be better than indavidualy split by the local forces i understand that there would be questions about interview process but there are 56 county's in England and wales not sure about Scotland. But a there has got to be a better method of doing it iv just been reading and there were 9,053 new grants for FAC and 21,438 for shotgun certificate in the UK and wales last year alone and 153,603 existing FAC and 582,494 shotgun certificate exsisting all the figures quoted came from the government website.Im not surprised they can't keep up but there's got to be a way to resolve it. The dvla or passport office don't have waiting times of a year and a half like some forces. What would you be prepared to pay to make a better structure how would you change it could basc or the CA not consider becoming a licensing authority Linked to the police and the government via a database that works and help's the police get it sorted.

Er, which question do you want answered first?

For external licensing look up old HM Inspectorate of Constabulary report that said the LAST organisation that SHOULD be the one issuing FAC's & SGC's was the Police.

Best system?

New Zealand type works well, most other European countries also have their good & bad points.

As it stands we're the most restricted & legislated European country for gun ownership & use.

Fees for this privilege, that I'd be happy with?

Free. The powers that be want all the legislative rigmarole & hoop jumping so let them ******* pay for it....we pay through interference & inconvenience.

The way most government databases crash & burn at a cost of billions I'd be very wary of our details being linked to ANY other national system...too big a database makes for too many operators = human error & human interference/prying.

It's early days for the NHS tie in...my 2c is that an information leak WILL happen that ends in theft of firearms at best, the worst case can be too easily imagined. (How many GP surgeries in Britain? All models of politeness & efficiency? Staffed by altruistic impartial pillars of the community?)

All NHS sites are now an open source to what your hobbies are. Want to add the library, DSS, Post Office, milkman....?

If one office can process efficiently why don't they all do likewise? Same checking to be done across the board, same inspection, identical application forms, etc.

Office politics, local agendas, or...?

The first British firearms act was brought in due to fear of communist uprising after the Russian revolution, exactly 100 years ago. The public were told it was because of bank robberies.

Not much has changed in a century - except we've got fewer rights to own a smaller range/type of firearm...

So yes, the system is broken...but they cannot eat humble pie & admit this & scrap it (we're not Canada - read up on their long-gun registry)

Pretty much sums up my thoughts too.

Slightly off topic but it would be particularly useful if they could provide a photo card license similar to your driving licence, would make it a lot easier with buying cartridges and showing your licence at a shooting ground. The paper obviously still needed for when you buy a gun but to me it just doesn't feel durable enough to last 5 years!

Mine never last five years, they are filled and sent in for reprinting, go back in the SGC wallet and last very well.

I would rather have all of the issuing authorities working together and offering equally good service, the photocard can wait.

That's what they have in New Zealand

Tell them when you've bought something, nothing written on your licence. No pre-approval for rifles or shotguns: see one, got the cash? Buy it. Applies to rifles, ammo, etc., anything in the normal category. Pistols & some semi auto rifles/shotguns & full auto kit are all specific extra categories.

Best part is renewal time. They can ask what you currently posses. You can legally refuse to tell them. (for normal category kit)
