Spring drillings are just around the corner.

The weather is set fair for the next few days. Already some ground prep has been carried out and I expect that drilling will take place on the Wolds this week. I know of two fields of beans to go in plus lots of spring barley followed by peas at the end of April.

No doubt the pigeons will have worked out ways to avoid being shot by then.

Spring drillings today are not has good has in the past with modern drills most of the seed is put well down with very little left on the surface After a couple of days birds are moving to other newly sown fields so it is best to shoot drillings straight after the seed is sown

Here's wishing you under a pure gold flight line. You'll need the recoil reducer for that!

everything around here was Autumn planted and is growing well. They dont seem to be drilliing any odd bits as of yet. Probably as stated it might be so, so on top but it is still sticky underneath. the local football club wanted to roll the pitches but it is just like chewing gum and was sticking to the wheels of the ride on that they were doing the pitch with.

That looks like great shooting ground, like the first partridge drive we did on the shoot (perhaps the same field?).

No its not the same field. If you remember we were standing in winter rape which is still in place and 2' high.

Update

Yesterday at 8:00 I went to watch two day old drillings. I watched for an hour and never saw a pigeon. The same exercise was repeated at 11:00 and 14:00 with the same results. There is a lot of seed on top so I cannot fathom it.

I always reckon it generally takes them up to 3 days to find it, then they're on it for 3 days, then they're gone, leaving only a motley collection of Ferals, stock doves and blackies.

Modern drills however don't leave much on the top, so they may move on quicker, a lot depends on what seed has been drilled..?

Anticipation. Expectations. Cultivation. Heart palpitations. I can't wait for some drilling action. Got my new Hushpower for early starts; picking up my repaired 1965 Franchi 48 AL from Wabbitbosher on friday and have the new Affinity as back up. Am I tempting fait? Bleedin well hope not.

Sunday went for a look at a field back to spring sowing after a 10 year lapse with other crops. Ten years ago, through either operator or machinery fault there was spilled seed barley thick on the ground from pre Easter weekend until Easter weekend. Three of us had around 160 in an afternoon session, pigeon which were a dot in the sky set there wings and were coming in regardless even when we were in the field picking the slain and setting up decoys. Sunday past there was a handful of pigeon on the headrig right on a known flightline. As there were no other options humped a load of gear a field and a half, hide erected decoys out , 3 hours later packed it all uphill back to the car without seeing a bird.
