Bullets and Hold limits

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Sorry if this comes off as a bit of a newbie question but how do bullets for reloading work with regard to you limit to hold?

I know expanding bullets are entered onto your ticket as they are section 5 although I understand this is about to change.

But what about non expanding bullets i.e. match ammunition how does this work? Is it entered onto your ticket on purchase or can you buy what you like and just show your FAC?

Also for both the above do the bullets themselves count towards your total hold capacity or is it only the assembled cartridges?

The only reason for asking is it involves a bit of a trip for me to get bullets and I would like next time I go to stock up a bit with components but dont want to fall foul of my hold capacity.

I hope this makes sense

Cheers Zetter

As the law stands, you can have as many non-expanding bullets on your licence as you like. The RFD will write them on your ticket, but they don't count towards your total until they are made up into rounds.

Expanding bullets themselves count towards your total and are considered live rounds, whether made up or not, even though they are nothing but chunks of metal.

Thats really helpful I just want to get some non expanding for things like the PW shoot rather than burning V max so I will pick up a batch.

For non expanding bullets its just as easy to buy online especially if your nearest stockist is out of your way. Ive never had them put on my fac either.

This is the problem when expanding ammo law changes, if you mail order how are the flo's going to check your ammo use?

Realistically, what difference does it make? Its checking for checking's sake. If you are legit you are legit, if you are not legit you can pull the wool over their eyes so easily it makes no difference anyway.

No different to when I was target shooting according to my FAC I'd never bought an ammo for my 7.62 but I used it nearly every weekend in the warmer months.

My feo said if they are not made up it doesn't count.

I asked for 500 .233 on my ticket and It made him ask why. That was his answer

Issue is I couldn't sell you 500 bullets only what your licence allows you to hold or buy.

Which is completely meaningless legislation because if he was some sort of fruitcake its inconceivable he would ever need more than one box of 100. Even if he did need more he could stockpile them, so where is the inherent safety in restricting them?

What it does restrict are my totally law abiding mates who live in Mid Wales and face an all day round trip driving to buy one box when they possibly could buy ten boxes a year.

I cant remember if it was off here or someone told me about it but I was talking hold limits on Rimmy ammo with someone and they knew a guy who had a .22lr for bunny control in his garden and as he didnt have a massive issue they set his hold limit at I think 25. Which presented a bit of an issue as they come in boxes of 50 :)

I just keep my receipts every time I buy non expanding as well as S5 (which get recorded anyway) which is proof positive that I've bought them, and they get recorded. Everything gets recorded so that at renewals time I can demonstrate, supported by evidence, that I have bought x amount over the 5 year period. It helps to justify your allowance, because I've been reliably informed if over the 5 year lcence period your actual use will be reviewed and may be reduced accordingly, if your allowance hasn't been used. Better safe than sorry. Record them and keep the receipts.

Haven't seen the latest on S5, but I believe it will still be some time before current law changes there.

Knew of a shooter with a hold limit of 100/110.

Had almost 120 on renewal. Almost got prosecuted for it.
