I find this really odd. Why buy a gun and then come on here and ask what it is like to shoot?

Just get out there and stoke it up and use it. The cyclic speed of the action is quick but because the bolt and barrel both recoil together for a short distance it is a bit different. Take no notice of all the talk. Concentrate on the target and shoot to kill. It is possible to alter the recoil effect from low power loads to high power loads by altering the braking ring in the recoil system. A mate has got one and shoots really well with it. It can really handlehigh power loads and they are very reliable.

Hi Chris.

I have one which I christened "Satans pogo stick". You need a good mount to prevent stovepipes.

The 48 AL is a Italian copy of John Moses Browning's A5 long recoil design. inertia design so less cleaning.

Aluminium receiver so it's light to carry (6lbs), Length of Pull of 14.25 in., which is about average for a shotguns.

70mm carts only (auto thing) and has a adjustable band system for light or heavy loads, mine shoots 24g with bevel down but I have heard of 21g working.

The recoil effect takes some getting used to but practice makes perfect, Mine is fixed choke (Half) and works fine.

You can not load/unload from the mag, just throw a cart in and press the release button to fire your first shot, they are a reliable and cheap.Try it and see if you like it.

I can send you a link to the manual if you do not have one.

You can unload, just press the action spring. Very simple when you get the hang of it.

Best gun I ever owned, biggest mistake I ever made getting rid of it.I bought it off my local butcher and it just fitted.Had many an auto after that and it was never the same.Hard to find a mint one.

If I ever started shooting again it's the only gun I'd have even if I had to pay a lot of money for one.

Why not just buy a Browning Auto 5? Lots about and you can an absolute minter for around 400 quid.

For the 48 AL to cycle well, you need to keep it clean from crusty deposits and gums. That means the mag tube but also the action spring. it is easy to wipe down the mag tube and that is the first place to go. Depending on the tolerances on your gun, sometimes it is better fully dry (like franchi recommend) and sometimes a tiny spec of light oil is better. I would always start it dry.

Then, there is the action spring which is behind the bolt and goes down into the butt stock. if that is gummed up then it is actually a stiffer spring than the mag tube and will kill the last 1/2" of movement of the bolt. You'll get inconsistent ejection, stovepiping, or non ejection entirely (though the bolt will unlock and go back an inch or so). If you are not getting good ejection after having cleaned the mag tube and visible (when assembled but action open) moving parts, then stripping it down further will be a good idea, especially for an older gun. The butt stock is 2 screws on the plate plus the action bolt inside the butt. Soak the back end of the action in white spirits to loosen grime and then brush it all out. If you are comfortable stripping the action down all the better so you can get a brush on it. Let it dry and lightly lube before putting it back together.

Mine will cycle down to 24's without problems though it won't do 21 superlights.

Also as a nifty test you can check the force required to cycle the action. With an empty gun (double check 3 times) and closed action, put the butt of the gun on the floor, barrel up. Push straight down on the barrel with your hand and you should be able to cycle the action to 'open' position. You'll feel a steadily increasing resistance for the first 2" or so and then a more firm resistance the rest of the way. That is the action spring kicking in. You can build a feel for if that second force is very excessive or if the mag spring is too tight and catching.

thanks

rick

Yeah Mick certainly is the main man. He is helping bring an old 48AL back to a usable condition for me. It was my late Uncles and was his wedding present from his wife in 1965. It's a cool old gun and means an enormous amount to me. I watched my uncle in awe, as he shot many a quarry with skill and confidence with it, in it's original 5 shot capacity. I don't know how many shells have gone through it, but it's a lot. It feels nothing like my new Affinity, but then to me it is history, emotion, family connection and is like a classic car or antique. Yes these weapons have flaws, but these flaws are what give it character. We're not going to use an old gun for competition clay shoots where consistency is paramount, it's to take out into the field and knock a few crows or pigeons down and enjoy the past relived for a few hours in mad stress filled modern world. Enjoy a 48AL or any other old gun for that matter, they're great.
