A minor indulgence

I zero my rifles, load develop and plink down the side of my barn at 50 yards. Due to the way the land slopes, the ground is often boggy and due to the traffic on the grass it's also pretty uneven.

We are having a large concrete slab put in for a drive so whilst we had the digger there I got the contractor to excavate and shutter a 7x7 foot square hole which was subsequently filled with pretty strong concrete this afternoon. It's all tamped and edged properly and has 2 layers of steel mesh in it (mainly because he didn't want the other half lying around in his yard) so in a couple of days I can lie prone and stay dry whilst wasting even more money on ammunition!

Reckon it added about £150 to the bill which isn't bad. We can also use it for barbecues or something

All you need now is a shed or covering and you can be out there All weathers. Then you can get the digger back and sink concrete pipe into the ground, a manhole up the butt end and you got an indoor outdoor underground range.

Don't really want a permanent shelter there but easy enough to rig up a tent to go over the top. Not sure about a manhole up the butt end - sounds painful! :D

A geeerrrmann.

Why am I reading that in a Scouse advert?

Anyway, sorry to disappoint but it's actually a blanket and extending the range any further would involve some very major earthworks which would be easier to do elsewhere. I can shoot 100 yards from the drive and we've just had that concreted too although there's a slightly higher risk of being run over

good for you and like you say can be used for other stuff

Struck me yesterday that the huge telescope we have sat in a shed would go well on the pad. It's one that was sat in someone's shed for years and we have been lent it to see if we want to buy it but it hasn't been out of the box since it was delivered months ago!

That might be a bit of overkill to use for a spotting scope at 50 yards

The whole area is below the water table and is mostly rubble anyway (it's been excavated down to build the barn). The slab is slightly proud anyway and is unlikely to flood completely. I've filled the trenches with mud now so it will grass up fairly soon at this time of year
