Getting the Mrs a SGC..

Morning All

Just interested in getting some views on this from other members.

My wife comes clay shooting with me occasionally. she enjoys it and thinks she would like to maybe try and do a bit more when the weather picks up. We also talked about the investment I have in guns and how if anything happened to me she would have to have the guns sold or transferred to a certificate holder probably at less than they are worth. We dont have any close friends or family members that shoot either.

So we have completed an application for her to get her "ticket" and have put down that she doesn't currently hold any guns, although if she starts to shoot more regularly we may buy her one. I dont expect she will shoot that often but at least if she does get into it she can own her own shotgun at some point.

I was just wondering what the FEO will make of this, the "good reason" if they ask is so that she can shoot as a certificate holder and own her own gun, but obviously there is the added benefit that she would be permitted to have my guns transferred to her ticket if they ever needed to be.

Does this sound a sensible approach?

What do others do with spouses that shoot?

Put them on her ticket as well i believe you can "share" the shotguns then if anything happens to either of you both are covered .Ring your FEO and see what he advises as its slightly different to FAC where no 1 else can have access to your safe.atb

We both have licences, didn't as such have to give a reason just had to answer questions on experience and where we intended to go.

As clakk says 'shared' is how we were told to put each other's on licences by the feo, this is because I have one big cabinet and we both have access to it. If anything happens to the other it's one less worry!! As you say there can be a substantial amount tied up in them.

I'm now on a FAC due to northern irish differences. My better half is right handed and none of my guns fit or are used by her at all but thats the way they set it up. Oddly they put her shotgun on my FAC and her FAC lists that she has access to all 'my' guns. A bit odd but works well enough.

Before we moved over here we both had SGCs, on which her certificate listed all the shotguns in the house as 'shared'.

Just inform your wife, partner, child (adult of course), or best friend that if anything happens to you, they must request a section permit to allow hem to dispose of the guns as they see fit, RFD, sale (perhaps not what the y wish to be dealing with along with everything else, or apply for a full cert to keep them.

As you have an SGC and no "good reason" is required missus kust posts off for,s and waits for feo to call.

when my wife got her sgc (and later her fac) all my guns/rifles were added to her tickets so we are 'joint' owners,

makes it so much easier than faffing about with seperate cabinets, the only thing the mrs doesnt have access to is the 2nd ammo cabinet as she doesnt have expanding on her ticket :)

not only that, you can send "err indoors" to buy cartridges. just put them down on the shopping list.....

bread

milk

eggs

gamebore white gold.

I like that.. made me laugh!

Seriously, thanks to everyone that responded. I already have 2 cabinets and no room for any more so I'll add my guns to her ticket, seems like the best way forward.

My other half just got hers approved. Prior to this she had some lessons, her own peg on a game day and a genuine interest in shooting. However, she doesn't have her own gun and I don't think it matters to the police whether you intend on buying one or not when they decide if you are fit to have a licence.

Anyway, the police approved it without any problems, we had to do it across two forces. It was the MET that came over to interview her at our rented flat in London and two days later the licence arrived.

I'm not planning on dying and needing someone to sell my guns. But jokes aside it will make things much easier now that she can transport mine if necessary. We are always between London and the Midlands and I often shoot at weekends. If she wants to drive up early it's not a problem as she can take the guns and I can get a train on Friday evening. Previously I would have had to transport them in the car myself.

I did that about a year back. I phoned ahead and reserved 3000 carts and said she would collect Saturday (I was working all the time that month).

She turned up, having never visited the shop before. They must have twigged a woman in that shop was a suitably rare event it had to be her and started loading up the disco with the cartridges before she had even said hello.

The chap asked if she wanted anything else and so she had a look at a lightweight Winchester but didn't buy it, to which the chap said 'go on, you have his licence, his debit card, go for it'. They hadn't for a moment thought the certificate she got out was her own, and had assumed I had sent her with my shotgun certificate!

And that is the point, will just make life easier if she has one. Now if only the lazy girl would go out and get her photos done I could send the application!

We got both a SGC, and we share the cabinet space -- I never considered that she wouldn't be 'allowed' to manipulate my shotguns, on me, hers! Now I can understand that FAC migth complicate things, but for SGC? We didn't add guns to both SCGs either, hers are on hers (mostly) and mines are on mine -- I'd *assume* that anything happenning to either of us would be simple to resolve, are we are both active shooters...

We have 2 cabinets in, because I was planning to get a FAC. But now as we've been out rifling with some mate she also wants one(!) so we might continue sharing after all...

Some force insist the guns are on both certificates with shotguns other don't.

FAC she can't have access to your rifles unless they are also on hers. A client recently got told off for cleaning his and his wife's rifles after stalking as he was not to have indendent access (believe was their term), so now the both have variations in to mirror each other's rifles barking but there we go.

This seems to imply that your wife used a shotgun without a certificate on a game day? not legal, artificial targets only. You risked yours.
