In Clover

Recommended Posts

Friday was a disaster with three hours looking between 10.00 and 11.00 and the only birds I found were fifteen spooked by a buzzard. In retrospect I was looking too early in the day and the birds were not on the move to feed.

Saturday collected DB and we decided to try and pick up a flightline and follow, after an hour we had not found any lines. We called in a few farms and asked if they were drilling they all replied "Next Week". It was now getting on and we scanned from the back of one of the farms down a deep wide valley, this farm is always the first to ripen on the cereals due to it being a sun trap. As we watched we noticed a small number of pigeons dropping out of a wood on the hill and flighting down the valley but they went out of sight. So we walked over the brow and we found a rape field that we didnot know about which had the hint of yellow, so was nearly in flower. As we watched it the birds were not going in on the rape but feeding on the hawthorn hedge and also on the clover on the next field. So we walked back to the farm to confirm we were ok to drive the fields as in the week we had received some heavy rain. We had the go ahead and were amazed how dry the grass fields were but this must be due to the conture of the valley and the drying wind and sun. We set up at 12.00 on the clover next to the rape in the first hour we had ten birds but as we put out more decoys on spikes the number increased. We had to pack up at 17.00 as I was attending a charity quiz night with the family and needed to get home. We ended the day with eightythree pigeons and six jackdaws that flew within range.
