WelshAndy Posted March 31, 2017 Report Share Posted March 31, 2017 I have my name on pup that will be ready to leave the dam in 6 weeks, but I've also been offered a 7 month old pup - its from good working, health tested parents but it's been in a pet environment and just started chewing the furniture, and basically been 'free range' so they are looking to rehome it. Would I be better off with the pup - clean slate, or take the 7 month old and hope it hasn't picked up to many bad habits. She went on to hunt, point, retrieve, and was a brilliant water dog. She had a 5 pence size white patch on the back of her right front poor, i am sure she had pointer in her blood as she would do the perfect pose. Some dogs come good. Good luck with your choice. silver fox 1 Posted March 31, 2017 Report Share Posted March 31, 2017 I am no expert in dog training so it's just my opinion have a good look at the seven month old dog first and see if you think you will bond with it seven months is a good age as you have bypassed most of puppy stage and you will be pretty much ready to go straight away with this dog The chewing will be a sign of boredom and if you think about it all a puppy will do is sleep eat and sh for the first six months I think it's more about bonding with the dog then anything all the best with what ever you decide regards sf1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mochastorm Posted March 31, 2017 Report Share Posted March 31, 2017 Seven months is not too old, but there will be issues to unravel before you move on. I believe that the most important factor is how the respective dogs are bred. Working stock, health tested make the older dog an attractive proposition. If however the younger pup has the same attributes I personally would go with the younger dog, mainly for the reasons already given regarding bonding. There are significant stages in a pups life which are important in their brain development which can be very difficult if not impossible to resolve later. scotslad Posted April 1, 2017 Report Share Posted April 1, 2017 Is it possible to either get the lab on a few days trail/loan or have a very good look at it and mibee even take it for a walk or just play with it/throw dummies in the owners garden withput him being there. If ur fairly experienced/decent trainer most labs at that age should still be easily trainable. Possibly some of the other breeds it might be more of a challenge. Think the only thing i'd be corncerned about might be gunshot or if family having been playing tug o war wi the dog as could be hard to rectify but just take more time and patirence Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
