Solo Weekend

Recommended Posts

DB had to work this weekend so I was out on my own. We always say that the Course fishing Close season ( 14th March to 16th June) is the worst time for pigeon shooting so I think that he would prefer to work. I helped at the stables and managed to to get ou for 11.00 and start looking . We do not have many seeded fields on our permissions so I looked at any possibility and found small numbers on paddocks and sheep fields with young lambs on them so the possibility to shoot is limited. As I passed an old mustard field I noticed it had been sprayed off so stopped to view the field. It had a good number of crows on it and a few flighting pigeons so I drove down to the field after seeking permission. The field had been direct drilled with Oats and as the field is a heavy grey clay most of it was on the surface. So I set up under a tree to give me some shade and a possible landing tree for the pigeon. I had twelve thawed pigeon and six crows which I put out on spikes no magnet It was now 14.00 and I had a steady return of the corvids and the occasional pigeon come to look but not to close. I packed up at 18.00 and picked up ninetysix corvids and nine pigeon.

Saturday was similar help at the stables and come out after breakfast. The previous night I had seen pigeons feeding locally on buds at 20.00 so I think I was going out to early . I looked and could not find and number of pigeons so decided to shoot crows and as I was heading to the the one farm the farmer passed me in the lane and I told him I would be shooting his crows as they are feeding on the cattle feed in the barns. I do not like shooting in farm buildings as to me it is " Cowboyish" so I watched the fields at the back of the farm and picked up on a pigeon flightline at the side of a tall tree so decided to set up there. Twelve pigeons under the tree to my left and six crows out on the bank to my right , all on spikes. I was all set up for 13.00 and the crows came straight back in a steady stream. I did not see a pigeon untill 16.00 when three pairs came as if on rails , then nothing , so I packed up at 16,30 and picked up thirtyfour corvids and six pigeon.

This will be my last report for a few months as the wife is having her second hip replacements next week and can not Drive, handle the stables and cook so I'm the perfect husband for the next few months. I will look forward to many reports of massive pigeon hauls while I'm off.
