Warship

Watched the first episode of Warship last night ( HMS Ocean ) Flagship of the fleet. Sailing to the Persian Gulf. Both main engines shut down in the Channel and had to be restarted, cooling water leak discovered while in the Eastern Med. While battling a storm cylinder head had to be removed from one engine and repaired, which in turn had to be hauled up several deck levels using a block and tackle taking hours to complete procedure. Now I know this vessel is twenty years old but surely a spare exchange cylinder head could have been on stand by. Every vessel I worked on always did. Program did not show this ship in a good light or being very efficient.

Look forward to next weeks episode.

And it is now evident that the Army Air Corps apache helicopters are The Fleet Air Arm.

If we are the fifth largest economy in the world then where the hell has all the money gone.

We used to make jokes about the Swiss Navy but not any more.

I am sure Vladimir enjoyed the programme immensely.

Most of those heli's onboard are Army. Nothing new, a lot of the Harrier force were RAF onboard the aircraft carriers much to the dismay to the RAF who had to go on it.

I know it's the sun but here is a link to what it is all about. Total fred karnos government stuff. spend a load of money of something and then offload it for less than what was spent on it.. And £2 million for an aircraft carrier as scrap!!! and whats wrong in us using it? if the Brazilians are going to use it why cant we? >>> https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/3291874/royal-navys-flagship-helicopter-carrier-hms-ocean-could-join-brazils-fleet-as-defence-chiefs-confirm-it-is-up-for-sale/

Anyone got an old canoe or something that the gov could use for a patrol boat . We could mount a 410 on it as main armement

I cant help but think its going to help reduce public moaning when we sell Ocean to Brazil which is what is in the rumour mill currently !

The Navy are so short staffed they need all they can for the two new carriers and I guess the rotary wing from Ocean will get split up and divided between the two carriers.

:hmm:

Air support. Dominate the skys and you own the battlefield, at least in a conventional war.

True, but when you've only got one or two you're afraid to risk losing them so they get placed out of any real danger. Anyway, how can we dominate the skies with helicopters?

I think we should have kept the Harriers until we had a viable alternative. What we are left with now is no more than a token show of strength that couldn't repeat what we did in the Falklands all those years ago.

I am no military expert but is there a role for large ships in the navy any more? Aren't they just a sitting target? Everybody likes to see a large carrier but what is their real purpose?

I suspect all have a very over armed fast protection vessel that hangs in the background.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt (big stick) certainly did when it came here recently but it was never in sight of the big one.

The reason all of it has gone is that some clown thought we could borrow kit as required from somewhere in Europe.

Whoops!

They are normally part of a carrier group which will have the aircraft carrier protected by destroyers which specialise in anti aircraft / anti missile defence and then further out you would have frigates that specialise in anti submarine warfare.

Whilst carriers, destroyers and frigates all carry similar defence systems that is their usual roll.

I have maintained, for years, that to keep an army, navy and air force seems an expensive folly. The many layers of officer's and administration could be trimmed in one fell swoop by simply creating a comprehensive marine force that combines the best elements of all three services.

Sure, we'd lose umpteen historical regiments with all the associated history and ceremony but by heck, would we save a tonne of money that could be plowed into improved equipment and better facilities for the serving soldiers, airmen and sailors. Mind you, I can't see those in charge being in favour of that.

Is this another daft idea of mine or not? (I have similar thoughts regarding the emergency services by the way. One central service with a few specialists in any particualr discipline but with enough training to cover the other emergency requirements - for instance, why does an RTA require ambulance, police and fire service all in attendance?).

Run the oceans we couldn,t run a bath anymore ,how can a navy have more admirals than ships :hmm: .Putin must be laughing his head off we are selling what we cant replace and the treasury wont let them as they need new pencils first

Did you see the pile of scrap Putin sailed past us recently? A good shot with a catapult would have seen them off

Sorry Mick - Daft idea. Far too much specialisation required.
