On Friday last week the farmer has drilled 2 large fields with barley which I had been looking forward to for some time hoping for the first large bag this year. They are in a good location and not many drilled fields in the area so was hoping a few pigeons will make it to the field. Pigeons found the fields on Sunday afternoon and allowing for numbers to build up decided to hit them on Wednesday as had some time off. The farmer has seen good numbers both on Monday and Tuesday.

As planned, yesterday I was on the field by 9am and was very hopeful when the fields had well over 500 pigeons on them. Even further, when I approached the pigeons just took a short flight to the other end of the same field. I made sure to drive the pigeons off the fields and adjacent woods and was set up by 10am.

In the morning there was no sign of pigeons and no flight lines across the fields either. Thinking that at some point the pigeons will return for a feed I stuck it out till 5pm when it started raining at which point I raised the white flag and called it a day.

From the hopeful best day this year it turned out to be the worst with a total of 2 shots for a flighting pigeon.

No more drillings expected but hoping for some shooting later this month on failed rape.

So frustrating. I have got one good field that has just been drilled, looked this morning and will check a bit later but nothing there at the moment. When and if they find it I am hoping for some good shooting. But it being a bank holiday weekend I am working full on till Tuesday. I expect it will be one shot and they will all vanish.
